Berries take finale

Jennings leads Logan past Winamac in sectional tuneup

WINAMAC — For the most part Logansport’s girls basketball team was sharp in a sectional tuneup at Winamac Thursday night.

Super sophomore Whitney Jennings had 33 points, six rebounds and five assists to lead the Berries to a 68-47 win.

“She’s a heck of a player, everybody knew that,” Winamac coach Jeff Wagner said. “There were a lot of people here just to watch her play.”

Jennings was 15 of 23 from the field in the win. She had 16 points in the first quarter to help stake Logan to a 23-13 lead. After three quarters of play she had 30 points and Logan led 52-33. The lead got to as big as 60-38 midway through the fourth.

But it isn’t just Jennings’ at times dominant play that makes the Berries (18-3) dangerous in the upcoming IHSAA Tournament.

“They’ve got too many dimensions to handle,” Wagner said.

Rachel Jennings was also in double figures for Logan with 12 points. Madyson Price scored seven in just nine minutes off the bench. Kiley Victor added five points and a game-high eight boards.

“It was a good last game,” Whitney Jennings said. “This next week we’re just getting ready for Kokomo on Tuesday.”

The Warriors (15-5) played the game with two starters battling injuries. Leading scorer Sarah Redweik reinjured her ribs in Tuesday’s win over Caston and was limited to just 13 minutes but still managed seven points.

“We debated on whether to even play her. But she’s a tough kid and she wanted to play on senior night,” Wagner said. “She’s really sore. The good thing is last year the same thing happened and she came into the sectional and did a good job. There’s not quite as much time until we play in the sectional, but she should be OK.”

Forward Steph Shorter was limited with what Wagner said was breathing issues but still had 10 points in 19 minutes.

“I would have really liked to have given it a whirl at full strength,” the Winamac coach said.

Jessica Schramm led Winamac with 11 points. Katy Anspach added eight points and seven rebounds.

A big difference was the Berries had 22 more field goal attempts, as they won the turnover battle 16-6 and had had eight more offensive rebounds (14) than their opponents.

For the Warriors, 16 turnovers isn’t a bad total this season, but Wagner said there were about five that were totally unnecessary which needs to be cleaned up next week.

Logan coach Jerry Hoover thought his squad gave up too many easy baskets in the win.

“We’re not going to be able to play this kind of defense and get anything done,” he said.

Defense has been and will be a focus going forward for the Berries.

“We’ve had times this year where we’ve been good, and then we’ve struggled,” Whitney Jennings said. “It’s just a matter of going out there and stopping people. In the tournament we’ve got to get stops. It’s one and done, so we’ve got to play good defense next week.”

Sectional play starts just four days from now. Logan is hosting a Class 4A sectional and will face arch-rival Kokomo Tuesday. Winamac faces arch-rival North Judson Tuesday at the Class 2A North Judson Sectional.
