Lewis Cass’ boys swimming and diving team ended its regular season on a high note, defeating Logansport 100-86 Monday at the Berry Bowl.
Logansport (6-7) took home seven first places, while Cass (10-4) had five top podium performances.
“Swimming Logansport is always fun,” Cass coach Brian Thomas said. “[Logansport coach] Jon-Myckle [Price] always has fast boys in his pool, and winning seven out of 12 events proves that.”
Triple winner Sean Ritz and double winners Tyler Angle and Satchel Gray led the Kingfish to the hard-fought win. Individually, Ritz won the 200-yard individual medley (2:11.17) and 100 backstroke (:58.43) and Angle was tops in the 500 freestyle (6:01.22). Ritz, Gray, Zac Carbaugh and Jared Crum teamed to win the 200 medley relay (1:47.05). And Gray, Angle, Johnny Ziolek and Westley Brenner won the 200 freestyle relay (1:41.27).
“We had some tremendous times,” Thomas said. “Carbaugh went under the minute in the 100 butterfly for the first time, as well as Oliver Matzke and Luke Knutson in the 100 freestyle. Crum still continues to amaze the coaches and me, going :22.91 in the 50 freestyle, which is a half-second drop from his winning Mid-Indiana Conference time. He topped the evening off with a :52.12 in the 100 freestyle, nearly 1.5 seconds better than his personal best.
“We had so many other personal-best times broken for the evening, the coaches and I are just so proud of the job these boys have done this season.”
Logan’s coach also had praise for Cass.
“We swam hard and lost a fairly close meet,” Price said. “It’s fun to swim against Cass, and see the rivalry play out.”
Logansport was led by triple winners Bryce Fawcett and Martin Medo. Fawcett was first in the 50 freestyle and 100 freestyle and Medo was tops in the 200 freestyle and 100 butterfly. They teamed with Kevin Leung and Kyle Douglass in winning the 400 freestyle relay.
Also for Logansport, Schuyler Hand was first in the 100 breaststroke and Johnathan Hughes won the 1-meter diving program.
“Fawcett won in a close race in the 50 freestyle with a lifetime best. He also won in the 100 freestyle with a best time,” Price noted. “Medo won in the 200 freestyle and 100 butterfly, which also broke the school record by nearly half a second. Congrats to Martin for his strong swim.
“Also, Jackson O’Brien saw a best time in his 100 butterfly. Leung had a best in the 200 freestyle. Hand won the 100 breaststroke nearly setting his personal record. Joe Loposser saw his personal best time in the 100 breaststroke. Logansport won an exciting final race in the 400 freestyle relay with strong swims by Fawcett and Medo. Hughes won in diving as well, and is working hard to prepare for the sectionals.
“Our medley relay [team] saw their season best. In the 500 freestyle, Michael Anderson dropped eight seconds to swim his personal best, and Andre Kaufman dropped 14 seconds to set a personal best. Tim Martin dropped two seconds in the 100 backstroke as well.”
Gymnastics
3-way meet
Logansport placed second with a score of 96.8 in a three-way meet at Western. The host Panthers were first with a score of 101.95 and North Montgomery had a score of 74.3.
The Berries’ Madison Baldini was tops in the all-around (35.5), bars (8.3), beam (9.1) and floor (9.3). Baldini was second in the vault (8.8).
Logansport’s Julia Peattie took fourth on beam (8.4), fifth on all-around (30.30) and sixth on floor (7.55).
Morgan Kline’s fifth place finish beam (8.15) helped the Berries be the top team on that event with a score of 25.65, while Western was second (24.75). Kaleigh Wilkinson tied for sixth place in the vault (8.0).
“Kline is still out of two events due to an ankle injury, but will be ready soon,” Logansport coach Kathy Farrer said.
Girls basketball
Carroll 49, Lafayette CC 41
Carroll knocked off Lafayette Central Catholic to clinch second place in the Hoosier Heartland Conference.
The Cougars jumped to a 17-8 lead in the first quarter and then held off several Knight charges throughout the game. Carroll hit 17 of 21 free throws to protect its lead. Quinci Eller went 8 of 8 at the line in the fourth quarter to clinch the win.
Eller led the Cougars in scoring with 17 points. Abby Reinke had a double-double with 15 points and 12 rebounds. Jessica Yoder pitched in 10 points.
Carroll closes the regular season with a 16-4 record and will play Delphi Friday in the Class 2A Fountain Central Sectional.
