Logan’s Clark, Yeoman swim their way to the Natatorium

Logansport’s girls swimming team enjoyed its best day at the Warsaw Sectional in years.

The Berries finished in third place and had two swimmers win individual sectional titles to advance to next week’s state finals in Indianapolis.

Logansport junior Emily Clark (100-yard butterfly) and sophomore Becca Yeoman (50 freestyle) won their respective events to qualify for their first state finals.

Clark swam a personal-best time of 1:05.23 in the 100 fly to win the event by over three seconds.

Yeoman won the 50 free in :25.64 to edge Culver Academy senior Lauryn Robinson by .07 of a second.

Yeoman finished runner-up in the 100 free to Robinson by .29 of a second.

The Berries finished third as a team with 267 points behind champion Culver Academy (445 points) and third-place Warsaw (382). Cass finished fourth (232), and Pioneer placed ninth (106) in the 13-team field.

Logan second-year coach Heidi Hendricks-Knight was named the sectional’s Coach of the Year. The Berries had several big time drops on the day, and their coach was elated afterwards.

“Unbelievable. This was an amazing sectional for the girls. I cannot express how proud I am for these girls,” Hendricks-Knight said.

“I think they were just excited. We tapered really well and rested this week really well. For them to swim so well on Thursday and to come back and do this ... they were just pumped up.”

Logan sophomore Jennifer Crafford just missed advancing in the 100 breaststroke. She swam a 1:08.76 to smash her personal-best time, but she finished second behind Warsaw junior Ashley Van Wormer.

Crafford finished third in the 200 IM. Ashley Fawcett placed fourth in the 100 backstroke and eighth in the 200 IM. Paulie Frye finished eighth in the 100 breast.

Brooke Bullard placed fourth in diving to grab the final spot in Tuesday’s South Bend Riley Regional.

Logan’s 200 medley relay team of Fawcett, Crafford, Clark and Yeoman placed third in 1:56.34, topping its season-best time by three seconds. Logan’s 400 free relay team also placed third, and the 200 free relay team placed fourth.

For Cass, Kelsey Thieke finished third in diving to advance to the regional. Kirsten Carbaugh was third in the 500 free. Claire Crum placed fourth in the 200 free and fifth in the 100 free. The Kings’ 200 free relay team placed third, the 400 free relay team was fourth and the 200 medley relay team was sixth.

For Pioneer, Kaity Cover placed fourth in the 100 fly and sixth in the 200 IM. The Panthers’ 200 free relay team placed sixth, and the 400 free relay team was seventh.

Logansport resident Eberle Miller, a junior at Culver Academy, qualified for the state finals in four events. She won the 200 free (2:01.37) and 100 back (:58.65) and was part of the winning 200 medley and 400 free relay teams.

The prelims for the state finals will be held on Friday at the Indiana University Natatorium in Indianapolis.
