Panthers blitz Rebels, 70-26

ROYAL CENTER — Pioneer's boys basketball team won big Friday night in its home opener against Midwest Conference foe South Newton.

"I thought the crowd was great. It was a good night for Pioneer basketball," Panther coach Pat Skaggs said.

Carter Skaggs scored 27 to lead the Panthers to a 70-26 win, outscoring the Rebels by himself.

The 6-foot-4 sopohomore played with great energy as he scored 10 field goals including from from 3-point range.

"I thought the rest of the guys did a great job of getting me the ball in transition," he said. "You have to play great as a team to be successful and that's how we played tonight."

The Panthers are now 2-2 after an early loss at Lafayette Jeff and an emotional loss in the county tournament to Logansport a week ago.

"It was nice to get back on the court and get a big win to help forget about that tough loss at Logansport last Friday," Pat Skaggs said.

Pioneer started the scoring early and never let up, taking an 18-5 lead at the end of the first quarter.

South Newton is in the processs of rebuilding with a young team and never got things going as the Panther dominated throughout.

Brandon Scruggs had 16 points and Matt Dorris added 11 to complement Carter Skaggs' big night.

South Newton was led by Skylar Hiatt and Jarrett Hammel who scored eight points each.

Pioneer travels to North Miami tonight.

"It's a tough place to play. We still have some areas we need to improve," Pat Skaggs said.
