Caston’s girls basketball team is off to its best start in years after a 44-11 win over visiting Covenant Christian Friday evening.
The Comets have started the season 3-1 for the first time in over 12 seasons. Their 33-point win over Covenant Christian was their largest margin of victory since beating North White by 41 points in 2005.
Ingrid Martinez scored 12 points and Marli Leazenby had 11 to lead the Comets. Anna Brown scored six and Mickayla Rans and Katie Henry added five apiece.
“We got off to a really good start. We pressured them in the first quarter and got out to a 16-4 lead, which set the tone for the night,” Caston coach Carl Davis said. “We backed off in the second quarter. The girls got comfortable and stopped taking care of the things they took care of in the first quarter. But after halftime they took care of things on both ends of the floor.”
Covenant Christian dropped to 0-2.
Caston competes in the Northfield Tournament next Saturday. The Comets square off against Northfield at 11 a.m. to open tourney play, followed by Maconaquah vs. Heritage. The consolation is at 5:45 p.m., followed by the championship at 7:15 p.m.
Winamac 42, Rensselaer 38
A heavy-hearted Stephanie Shorter scored 18 points to lead the Warriors to a win past visiting Rensselaer.
“Stephanie played very well as we knew she had a heavy heart from the loss of her grandmother [Thursday],” Winamac coach Jeff Wagner said. “We give the Shorter family our condolences due to their loss.”
Jessica Schramm added 13 points in the win for Winamac (3-0).
The Warriors trailed throughout but grabbed the lead in the final minute and held on. They trailed 17-5 after one quarter, 23-18 at halftime and 27-26 after three.
Laura Tonner led the Bombers (3-1) with 20 points. Aimee Mattocks and Emilie Ziese added six apiece.
Winamac hosts Manchester tonight.

The Logansport, Lewis Cass and Pioneer girls track teams made the long trek to Madison-Grant High School for action in the 2013 Madison-Grant sectional. Several area girls had successful nights and will be advancing to regional action.
