LOGANSPORT — After two dominating wins to start the season, Logansport’s girls soccer team was dealt its first loss at the hands of Plymouth Saturday at the LHS soccer field, 2-1.
The Pilgrims scored a goal with 1:15 remaining in the contest to get out of town with the win.
“With a 1:30 left we got a transition towards our end and had a good run on, they stole the ball and cleared it, and we were out of position and they scored with 1:15 left,” Logan coach Todd Reiff said. “I’m disappointed we had a letdown late in the game and let them get a shot like that, but there were a lot of positives. We’ve just got to get things going and get more shots on goal.”
Freshman Whitney Jennings scored the Berries’ lone goal late in the first half on a penalty kick that tied the match at 1-1. She now has eight goals in three matches.
“Plymouth knew she had seven goals the first two matches and they really keyed on her and tried to deny the things she does well. They did a good job,” Reiff said. “We talked about things are going to change now because teams will respond differently. We knew we needed a different strategy and we weren’t able to do the things we talked about. I’m happy for her, but we need to bring balance back and our outside midfielders need to transition the ball better.”
Reiff said his squad got off to a slow start to the match.
“We were hesitant at first and they were beating us to the ball the first 35 minutes. They were a half step faster and won the 50/50 balls and were more aggressive. In the last five minutes of the first half we all of a sudden woke up and got some things done.
“The second half was a lot better. We were faster to the ball and made quick decisions and winning the 50/50 balls. We still allowed way too many shots on goal. Our goalkeeper Elli Buchanan had a lot of pretty saves and saved us literally many times.”
The Berries travel to West Lafayette Monday.
“West Lafayette always is a phenomenal team. They went to the semistate final last year,” Reiff said. “We’ll do the best we can and then we have four days off before the conference starts against Anderson on Saturday here.”
LaPorte 2, Logansport 0
The Berries suffered their first regular-season loss since 2008 with a loss at LaPorte.
Logan (1-1) had 12 shots on goal but to no avail, while LaPorte capitalized on its five shots with two goals.
“We made two really bad mistakes with the ball in our defensive third and LaPorte scored on both,” Logan coach Mike Turner said. “We have to improve our decisions we make from the back. We’ve had careless touches in the back that have led to all three goals that we’ve given up so far in the season. During the run of play we defend well and have given up few shots, but players have just misplayed the ball for easy goals. Offensively we looked good, we just can’t find the back of the net.”
Logan’s JV won 3-1 to move to 1-1. Cristobal Zarate, Orelio Baltazaar and Jesus Martin each scored a goal. Orlando Casimiro added an assist.
Northwestern Invite
Carroll (2-1) won the consolation match against Sheridan 1-0 in the invite.
The Cougars’ Alex Atkisson scored the only goal in the second half. Atkisson received the pass from Tim Ruby, who was credited for the assist.
Carroll was out shot by Sheridan 5-4 with goalie Jeremy Hayes having five saves.
“[We had] lots of chances, and finally got one to go,” Carroll coach Dave Falkenberg said.
The Cougars fell to the consolation game by losing to Twin Lakes 1-0 on a goal by Renato Puga in the first half.
Both teams had five shots on goal. Hayes was credited with four saves and Atkisson had one save.
“[There were] many chances for both teams, just couldn’t finish,” Falkenberg added. “The goal came on a penalty kick.”
Kouts 8, Winamac 1
The Warriors dropped their season opener at home on Thursday. Aaron Powell scored Winamac’s lone goal. Goalkeeper Paul Hettinger had 15 saves.
“It was a baptism by fire for our young team,” Winamac coach Mark Eber said.
After a Warrior shot on goal in the first 30 seconds, the offense struggled to get shots while moving the ball into the Kouts zone fairly well. The visitors had no such problem as they tallied seven goals in the first half against the Warrior keeper who was making his first-ever start.
“We had some good opportunities, but we were a bit tentative on both ends and made some key mistakes all over the field in the first half,” Eber said. “The second half was a different story as Paul seemed to settle in a little more in goal and take charge. We improved a lot in our overall play, although we still have plenty from each half to work on. We are a young team with only a handful of players with serious varsity time under their belts. We took our lumps [Thursday] but showed a lot of pride and resiliency. It was a learning experience and we just move forward from here.”
Rochester Invite
Logan placed ninth out of 13 teams with a 436.
Amy Worthington carded a career-best round of 80 and was second-low medalist. The junior was out with a 42 and in with a 38.
“The 80 was a great score, especially considering the conditions,” Logan coach Bob Bannon said. “The weather was miserable. It rained the entire round.
“The others played OK, but had to count a 14 or 15 which kills a round in a hurry.”
Other golfers for Logan were Katy Baar (114), Catie Keller (118), Alli Biggs (124) and Kait Wickersham (140).
Marquette Catholic Invite
Class A No. 5 Pioneer went 3-1 on the day in Michigan City. The Panthers opened the day with a loss to Class 2A No. 7 Fairfield 25-18, 25-23 before turning around to beat No. 1 Marquette Catholic 25-13, 25-23, Fort Wayne Blackhawk 25-12, 25-23 and Crown Point 25-17, 19-25, 25-11.
The win over Marquette was particularly satisfying for the Panthers, who have been knocked out by the six-time defending state champion Blazers in regional play in three out of the last four seasons.
“I think that’s a huge shot in the arm,” Pioneer coach Rod Nies said. “The girls were really pumped after we beat them. Marquette is having a rebuilding year, but like I told the girls, he’ll have them ready to play come tournament time. He’s a seasoned coach and he’s been where we want to go. He’ll have them ready.
“But it’s a huge shot in the arm to know we can compete with them and beat them — and beat them the way we did, especially in that first game. But they’re still No. 1 in my book. They may drop out of that, but they’re the team to beat in single A in the tournament until somebody beats them.”
Kelsey Williams had 20 kills, 11 blocks and four aces on the day for Pioneer. Kattie Lee added 20 kills, 10 digs, seven aces and six blocks, and Hillary Sharp had 20 kills and six blocks.
Cortney Hanson collected 57 assists and 11 aces. Marissa Centers posted 14 kills and Cassidy Corn had five blocks. Tara McWherter added eight digs.
Nies added the three-game win over Crown Point was “the best game I’ve seen my girls play.
“I couldn’t be prouder of the girls. They played some really tough teams. Williams, Lee, Sharp and Centers provided a balanced attack.”
Nies blamed himself for the loss to Fairfield in the 9 a.m. match.
“We hit a couple detours on the way up there and we didn’t get there early enough to get properly warmed up,” he said. “Fairfield is a very similar team to us. They went 5-7, 5-8 and were very athletic.”
Class 4A No. 2 Elkhart Memorial topped Fairfield in the title match.
Oregon-Davis Tourney
Winamac went 4-0 on the day and didn’t drop a single game in winning the tournament. The Warriors (5-1) defeated Culver 25-23, 25-23, Oregon-Davis 25-13, 25-16, Westville 25-14, 25-19 and Hebron 25-19, 25-23.
Allie DeFries had 40 kills on the day and Rachael Franko added 26 kills and 33 digs. Sarah Redweik dished out 81 assists.
DeFries, Franko, Redweik, Stefanie Boos and Katy Anspach were named to the all-tourney team.
“Our serve receive and blocking really got better as the day progressed,” Winamac coach Cathy DeFries said. “We had some outstanding plays against Hebron in the last match.”
N. White Invite
Kara Smith paced Caston with a 48th-place finish in 25:08. Maggie Daily placed 65th with a run of 27:21.

N. White Invite
Graham Redweik led Caston with a 51st-place finish in 20:49. Zach Smith placed 69th (20:50), Conner Martin was 82nd (22:42) and Justin Cousins placed 87th (25:46).
