Logan holds off Kokomo in sectional opener

LOGANSPORT — When it comes to tournament games, and a big rivalry game at that, you can throw out the records and the stat sheets.

Logansport’s girls basketball team was in a battle with arch-rival Kokomo from the opening tip in the first game of the Class 4A Logansport Sectional on Tuesday.

The Berries made some key plays to open the fourth quarter to finally get some separation, and they were able to hold on for a 49-46 win to survive.

They’ll face Harrison (3-18) at 6 p.m. Friday night in a semifinal contest. Eighth-ranked McCutcheon (18-3) faces Marion (11-10) in the later semifinal.

“I had a horseshoe in my pocket, and if that wasn’t enough I found another horseshoe in the other pocket,” Logan coach Jerry Hoover said following the nail-biter against Kokomo (9-12). “This time of year any win you get is good.”

The Berries (19-3) got the ball to bounce their way in the fourth quarter by making some key plays. Holding a narrow 38-37 advantage to start the frame, McKenzie Mills hit two free throws, Nakeya Penny had a three-point play and Whitney Jennings added a free throw to give Logan a 44-37 with 4:00 remaining.

But with the way the Wildkats were playing on this night, they weren’t about to go away.

Jasmine Love knocked down a 3-pointer, Anastacia Kirby scored on a layup and Kendra Ryker scored on a nifty reverse layup to cut the Logan lead 46-44 with 1:22 remaining.

Penny scored on a putback basket during that time, and Jennings later added a free throw with 50 seconds remaining to push the lead to 47-44. Two free throws by Ryker with 27 seconds left cut the lead down to one.

Following a Logan timeout, Jennings broke free of the Kats’ halfcourt setup and found a cutting Mills open for a layup to push the lead up to 49-46 with 12 seconds left. Kokomo got the ball past halfcourt and called a timeout with 7.0 seconds to go to set up its final play.

But Jennings got her hands on the in-bounds pass to push it into the backcourt, which created chaos for the Kats. They got the ball back into the frontcourt, but too deep — they got the ball around the basket but needed a 3 — and they passed the ball around and weren’t able to get off a final shot as Penny batted the ball away as time expired.

“We just ran out of time,” Kokomo coach Jason Snyder said. “We had two players coming off a screen for a 3, our two best 3-point shooters percentage-wise going each direction. [Jennings] got a hand on it.”

Kokomo entered the game shooting 34.1 percent from the field and 18.2 percent from 3-point range for the season. But the Kats shot 47.8 percent from the field in the first half, including 5 of 9 from 3-point range, and held high-scoring Logan to 30.4 percent to jump out to a 27-22 lead at halftime. Jordan Johnson made 4-of-7 3-pointers and scored all 14 of her points in the first half to lead the Kats.

Kokomo cut its turnovers down from 11 in the first half to four in the second despite more aggressive defenses played by Logan. But the shots started falling at a slower rate, as the Kats shot just 33 percent from the field and 1 of 7 from 3-point range in the second half. Meanwhile, the Berries upped their shooting to 40.9 percent in the second half and were able to get to the foul line just enough to beat Kokomo, as they outscored the Kats 13-4 from line for the game.

Jennings led Logan with 22 points, and the sophomore is now just two points shy of 1,100 for her career. She was just 6 of 17 from the field, though, and 8 of 13 from the foul line.

But she hit a stop-and-pop 3-pointer at the end of the first quarter to pull Logan to an 11-11 tie after one, and she hit a 3-pointer from the volleyball line to end the third to give Logan a 38-37 advantage. She also had key steals, deflections and assists down the stretch.

Penny had 13 points, Mills scored eight and Rachel Jennings added six. Kiley Victor added a team-high nine rebounds.

“They’re an outstanding team and very well-coached,” Snyder said. “This isn’t a one-player program, now Whitney is an outstanding player, but they have a great group.”

Ryker was also in double figures for Kokomo with 10 points. Kirby had eight points and 17 rebounds, helping Kokomo to a 34-26 rebounding advantage for the game. Love hit 2 of 4 3-pointers for six points.

Hoover credited Rachel Jennings’ defense on Johnson in the second half after her 14-point first-half explosion.

“I thought Rachel did a good job of shutting Johnson down,” he said. “I really thought Whitney did a great job with a couple steals that really was a turning point in the game. Nakeya played very well defensively in the second half and did a nice job I thought on the boards. Everybody we had out there played well.”

This is the first season Logan has defeated Kokomo twice in a season when one of the wins has included a postseason win. Logan has now won the last three games in the series, four of the last five and five of the last six. Logan is 4-1 against Kokomo in tourney play the last six years. Kokomo entered the contest with a very impressive .735 winning percentage in all tournament games since class basketball started in 1998.
