Peyton Zehner led Logansport’s girls swim team at the Warsaw Sectional preliminaries Thursday night.
The junior swam to a No. 1 seed in both the 200- and 500-yard freestyle events. The finals will be held on Saturday.
“She won both her prelim races by a fairly large margin,” Logan coach Jon-Myckle Price said.
Swimmers can advance to next week’s state finals with a first-place finish or by reaching the state time standard in their respective event. Zehner has swam in the last two state finals as an individual, competing in the 200 free last season and the 50 free as a freshman.
Also for Logan, Morgan McCloskey is seeded second in the 50 free and fifth in the 100 butterfly. Emilee Branham is seeded third in the 100 free. Ashley Fawcett is seeded fifth in the 500 free and sixth in the 200 individual medley. Katie Clements is seeded sixth in the 500 free and seventh in the 100 backstroke. Frankie Laymon-Lopez is seeded eighth in the 100 breaststroke.
All three of Logan’s relay teams will be competing in the finals on Saturday. The 400 free relay of McCloskey, Fawcett, Clements and Zehner is seeded third, the 200 medley relay of Clements, Zehner, McCloskey and Branham is seeded fourth, and the 200 free relay of Kait Wickersham, Fawcett, Kayla McCloskey and Branham is seeded sixth.
The diving prelims will be held at 9 a.m. Saturday, with the swimming and diving consolations and finals starting at 1 p.m.
Lafayette Jeff Sectional
Ellie Cain led Cass by swimming to a second seed in the 100 back. She’s seeded 1.67 seconds behind Benton Central’s Tori Taylor.
Cain is also seeded fifth in the 100 fly.
Claire Pullen is seeded fourth in the 100 breast and sixth in the 200 IM. Jade Sarver is seeded fifth in both the 50 and 100 free events.
Cass’ 200 medley relay team of Savannah Jay, Pullen, Cain and Sarver is seeded fifth, and the 200 free relay team of Cain, Pullen, Tara Tocco and Sarver is seeded sixth.
Girls basketball
Logansport 61, Cass 36
The Berries improved to 20-1 in winning their regular-season finale in Walton.
Jasmine Penny led the way with 26 points, six rebounds and five assists. LuQueena Roe had seven points, eight boards and six assists. Rachel Jennings added nine points.
“It was a game in which I thought the girls played hard. They wanted to get 20 wins,” Logan interim coach Dick Farrer said. “I was impressed with how hard Lewis Cass plays.
“We had the best movement we’ve had on offense for some time. We got the ball in a good place and made nice cuts.”
Brittany Cunningham, a freshman, led the Kings (1-19) with 11 points. Peyton Klinkhamer added nine points and six rebounds.
“The girls played really, really hard. They played inspired,” Cass coach Lindsay Leffert said. “Defensively they played much better and on offense they did a better job of attacking the rim. Hopefully this will propel us going into the sectional.”
Logan played the game without second-leading scorer Jennifer Tierney, who was out with a knee injury.
“She’s our [Dwight] Freeney right now,” Farrer said, referring to the injured Colts defensive player. “We’ll have to wait and see what’s happened. ... It’s to our advantage that we do have a week before we play in the sectional.”
Pioneer 62, Frontier 37
The Panthers improved to 9-10 with the win in Royal Center. They finish 4-3 in the Midwest Conference, good enough for fourth place.
Cortney Hanson led Pioneer with 15 points, which included three 3-pointers. Morgan Shanks scored 11 points and Kelsey Williams added 10. Katie Galbreath pulled down a team-high six rebounds.
Frontier dropped to 2-17 and 2-5 in the MWC.
Culver Academy 45, Carroll 42
The Cougars had a three-game win streak snapped with the loss in Flora.
Quinci Eller scored 19 points and Jessica Yoder added 11 for Carroll (15-4).
Kylee Shipley led the Eagles (14-6) with 15 points.
