Logansport’s girls soccer team always seems to play its best right around sectional time.

That appears to be the case again, as the Berries won at New Castle 3-2 in overtime Saturday in their regular-season finale.

With the win the Berries (7-7-1, 5-2 North Central Conference) finish tied for second in the NCC behind Marion (13-0-1, 7-0). Logan and Marion are the only two teams that have beaten New Castle (14-2, 5-2) this season. Logan’s sectional opponent Kokomo (11-5-1, 5-2) also finished tied for second.

“It was a great team effort. We finally found the team we knew we could be,” Logan coach Todd Reiff said. “What a big difference from when we played Kokomo earlier in the week. The girls picked up their effort. We had much greater intensity, much great focus on what needed to be done.

“We stepped up our pace of play and focused on what we need to do. We finished on our shots and had no letdowns. We played two really good halves of soccer instead of just one, which had been a struggle of ours of late.”

Seanna Redman scored the Berries’ goal in overtime. It was her second goal of the game. America Perez also scored a goal. Whitney Jennings had an assist.

Logan is hosting a Class 2A sectional this year and faces a rematch against Kokomo at 5 p.m. Thursday, followed by Marion vs. Western. The final is set for 1 p.m. Saturday.

The Berries look to be a dangerous team entering sectional play.

“We believe we’re capable of beating quality teams. New Castle, just look at their record, is a quality team,” Reiff said. “I like our chances. Kokomo and Marion both beat us and I’m sure they’re confident going in, and I can’t blame them. We have to put together a complete game to be successful.”

Boys soccer

New Castle 1, Logansport 0

The Berries were shut out at home in their finale. They finish 3-4 in the NCC.

“It was a tough loss to end the season,” Logan coach Mike Turner, who expected more this conference season.

“Everyone is disappointed in our loss, our season and our standing in conference. We were in every conference game but came up short on finishing goals. We have to improve on finishing or our tournament run will be short,” he said.

Logan will face Western at 7 p.m. Wednesday at the Class 2A Kokomo Sectional, following Kokomo vs. Marion. The final is set for 7 p.m. Saturday.

In other area sectionals, Caston will face the winner of Rochester and Maconaquah at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday at the Class A Peru Sectional. The final is set for 10 a.m. Saturday. Winamac will face Bremen at 5 p.m. Wednesday at the Class A Culver Sectional. The final is set for 5 p.m. Saturday.

Western 3, Carroll 1

Justin Willoughby had the Cougars’ (10-6) lone goal in Russiaville.

Jordan Roe, Zach Shahan and Mitchell Shahan each scored a goal for the Panthers (10-3-1).

Volleyball

Frontier 3, Pioneer 1

The Falcons won the Midwest Conference showdown against the Class A No. 7 Panthers in four games, 25-18, 25-21, 16-25, 26-24, in Chalmers.

Pioneer coach Rod Nies has said the two teams have the capability of meeting again in semistate play in late October.

“It was two really good teams going up against each other. Frontier with their size with [Jenna] Sullivan and [Kattie] Lee was a little too much for us,” Nies said. “We made some adjustments to go with a bigger block on Lee and that seemed to slow them down some, but we were playing against two great players. They did a great job. We’ve got work to do. If we clean up our mental errors we’ll be set to go, but we’ve got a lot of work yet.”

Gabby Dunlap led the Panthers (18-7, 5-1 MWC) with 15 kills, 24 digs and three blocks. Sarah Dorris had 13 kills and 23 digs. Cassidy Corn added 11 digs, and Hannah Tevis had five blocks.

Lindsey Miller dished 42 assists to go with 10 digs and three blocks. Kayte Miller had 25 digs and three aces, and Riley Morris chipped in three aces.

Sullivan had 16 kills, 12 digs and nine blocks for Frontier (22-2, 4-0), and Lee had 14 kills, 28 digs and three blocks. Megan Doyle dished 28 assists, and Jesah Marlatt added 15 digs and five blocks.

Caston Tourney

Caston went 1-2 on the day, defeating Oregon-Davis (25-23, 17-25, 15-13) and losing to Bremen (25-19, 25-10) and North White (25-8, 25-12).

Haley Hoover had 42 digs on the day for the Comets (8-16). MicKayla Rans posted 12 kills and five aces, and Sarah Holt had nine kills. Katelyn Miller dished 23 assists.

Boys cross country

Caston 26, N. White 28, Lakeland Christian inc.

Caston’s Seth Cousins won in 19:44 to pace the Comets. Michael Smith finished third (19:57) and Dalton Daily placed fourth (20:05).
