— When the going got tough for Twin Lakes, the bigger Indians became even more determined to get the ball inside against Lewis Cass’ girls basketball team Tuesday in Walton.
The Indians rallied from a nine-point second-half deficit, doing most of the damage in the post, in a 54-46 win to put a damper on the Kings’ senior night.
“I just told the girls we’ve just got to keep working inside,” Twin Lakes coach Brad Bowsman said. “They’re trying to keep it out of the middle and we’ve just got to do a good job of ball reversal and then attacking the middle, and I thought our girls did a lot better job of that.”
Renae Cotner had 21 points and Coryn Tirpak scored 15 to lead the Indians (9-11) to the win. The duo combined to get to the foul line 20 times, and the Indians outscored the Kings 20-9 from the foul line for the game.
The Kings (6-13) jumped out to a 19-12 lead at halftime. Senior Kinsey Weaver scored 10 of her team-high 15 points in the first half.
Cass coach David Sims was pleased with how his squad opened the game and wished it would have had a bigger advantage to start the second half.
“I thought we played well in the first half in every facet except free throw shooting,” he said. “We talked at halftime, if you hit your free throws, I think we would have been up by 13 or 14 instead of six or seven.”
Breanne Robertson opened the second half with a putback basket to give the Kings a 21-12 lead, but they went on a four-minute dry spell from there when the Indians went on a 11-0 run to retake the lead.
“I wish we could have had that third quarter back, that was the difference in the game,” Sims lamented.
Twin Lakes’ Morgan Gutwein and Chloe McAchren hit back-to-back 3-pointers early in the fourth quarter, and Tirpak and Cotner later had a four-point play when Cotner scored on a missed free throw to give the Indians a 36-29 lead midway though the frame.
But the Kings didn’t give up, and they cut the lead to 48-44 after a Maci Maupin basket on a putback after two missed free throws with 1:20 left to play. The Kings then had a shot to cut into the lead further but missed, and they traveled after hauling in the offensive rebound.
Cotner then scored in the post on an assist by Tirpak to push the lead back up to six, and the Indians were able to hold off the Kings from there.
Kourtney Mayhill was also in double figures for Cass with 10 points. Maupin scored nine and Maddie Eurit added eight.
Twin Lakes snapped a four-game winning streak, with three of those losses by four points or less to Rensselaer, Frontier and Winamac.
Cass, which had won three of five going in, hosts Western on Saturday in a makeup game.
Winamac 54, Caston 28
Winamac secured a share of the Midwest Conference title with the win in Fulton. Since the Warriors (15-4, 6-1 MWC) had to forfeit their win over Pioneer, they have to share the crown with Frontier.
Sarah Redweik and Steph Shorter scored 14 points apiece in the win. Jessica Schramm was also in double figures with 11.
Brittney Offenberger and Jessica Showley each had eight points for the Comets (6-13, 2-5), and Marli Leazenby added seven.
BOYS BASKETBALL
Tri-County 47, Winamac 42
The MWC standings got shaken up as defending co-champion Winamac fell at Tri-County.
“We just didn’t take care of business on the road that needed taken care of,” Winamac coach Kyle Johnson said. “We just didn’t play well. I didn’t put them in a good position to be successful. I just have to do a better job.”
Winamac (9-3, 2-1 MWC) jumped out to a 20-12 lead at halftime. Tri-County (7-8, 2-1) got to within 27-26 after three quarters before outscoring Winamac 21-15 in the decisive fourth quarter.
Zach Shidler scored 13 points, Kyle Krohn had 11 and Bryan McKinney had 10 for Winamac.
“We weren’t as aggressive as we needed to be offensively,” Johnson said. “We did a poor job on the boards defensively.”
Tri-County won despite shooting just 12 of 26 from the foul line.
Zack Patton led the Cavaliers with 16 points, and Lucas Vosburgh had 14.
Thirteen of the game’s 28 field goals were of the 3-point variety, with Tri-County making seven and Winamac six.
BOYS SWIMMING
Frankfort 102, Logansport 84
Logan had five first-place finishes on the night. Dustin Clements won the 50-yard freestyle, Marcus Record won the 100 free, Logan James took the 500 free, Ruben Roque won the 100 breaststroke and Dustin Shafer won diving.
“This was a tough loss,” Logan coach Heidi Hendricks-Knight said. “They came into this meet really strong. We had some good swims from our guys. They had some really close races. Marcus Record won with his best time in the 100 free. Ruben Roque also won the 100 breast. We are looking forward to our last dual meet next week against Lewis Cass.”
