Berries’ Penny picking up accolades
Logansport basketball standout Jasmine Penny is reeling in some nice post-season accolades.
This week, Penny received all-state honors from the Indiana Basketball Coaches Association and also an invitation to play in next month’s North/South Indiana All-Star Classic.
The IBCA named Penny to its 2009-10 all-state senior girls team.
Other players on the team are Jada Buggs (Elkhart Christian), Maegan Callaway (Mooresville), Bryonna Davis (Merrillville), Tabitha Gerardot (Fort Wayne Canterbury), Mur Hagerman (Pendleton Heights), Kylee Hamilton (Indian Creek), Khristian Hart (Evansville Harrison), Shanika Maddox (Fishers), Katy McIntosh (Austin), Courtney Moses (Oak Hill), Anna Munn (Decatur Central), Andrea Newbauer (Fort Wayne Concordia), Shelby Wall (Taylor) and Dee Dee Williams (Ben Davis).
The 22nd annual North/South Indiana All-Star Classic is set for April 18 at Oak Hill High School. The boys game will start at 2 p.m. and the girls game will follow at approximately 4 p.m.
Twenty-two boys compete in the first half of this doubleheader. Three Purdue recruits are featured on the South team — high-scoring guard Terone Johnson of North Central, Danville big man Travis Carroll and New Albany frontliner Donnie Hale. The South squad also features Bloomington South’s Erik Fromm, who is Butler-bound.
There are three 20 ppg plus scorers on the North squad — South Central’s Jake Kitchell (Indiana State recruit), Fort Wayne Blackhawk’s Russell Byrd (Michigan State) and Madison-Grant’s Jordon Cornelious (IPFW). Peru’s Wes Zimmerman is also on the North team.
The North boys will be coached by Mississinewa’s Chanse Young. Danville’s Brian Barber will guide the South crew.
Twenty-two girls will perform in the second game. Two Oak Hill standouts highlight the North team. They are the state’s leading scorer Courtney Moses (31.7 ppg) and center Ashley Pickering — Moses is a Purdue basketball recruit and Pickering is a Purdue volleyball recruit. Other outstanding North players include Elkhart Memorial’s Jada Buggs, (Wisconsin) and Logan’s Penny (DePaul).
The South team features Dee Dee Williams (Purdue) of two-time undefeated Class 4A state champion Ben Davis and six other Division I recruits who will play at Indiana colleges.
The North team will be led by Oak Hill’s Todd Law. Connersville’s Michael Thompson will coach the South.
The 2010 Classic Game Director is Oak Hill athletic director Rob Martin. Tickets are $10 and can be purchased at Oak Hill High School. Call 765-384-4381 for more information.
