PREP: Logansport wins boys XC county meet

Cass captures girls county crown

Logansport’s boys cross country team posted a nearly perfect score in capturing the Cass County meet for the second year in a row under coach Chuck LaDow’s tenure Monday at Caston High School.

The Berries had all five of its runners place in the top six for a total of 17 points. Caston came in second with 59, and Pioneer was third with 64. Lewis Cass, which had only four runners, had an incomplete score.

“We had a really solid team on paper,” LaDow said. “Our goal was to go one, two and three, and our four and five runners run up with [Pioneer’s Dylan Byce]. Last year we scored 24 points with Kyle Overway and Daniel Ortega, and this year we scored 17, so we actually improved. We are psyched about that.”

Logansport’s Jon Flory was crown county champion with a time of 17:38.05. Tate Gellinger (second place, 17:45.06), Travis Palmer (third, 18:00.25), Audie Kaufman (fifth, 18:20.71), and Chris Espinoza (sixth, 18:24.67) rounded out the Berries’ top five.

“I don’t think Flory finished in the top seven last year and this year, he is county champion. It shows the improvement he has made last year to this year and it’s a credit to his work ethic,” LaDow said. “Kaufman, who normally runs junior varsity, was our fourth-best runner on the team and he had a personal best.

“Overall, we ran pretty well, considering that they ran on tired legs.”

Pioneer’s Byce had a fourth-place finish in 18:02.48.

Caston had three of its top runners place in the top 12. Seth Cousins led the trio with a ninth-place finish (18:51.12), followed by Kevin Stapinski (19:22.21) and Nate Cousins (19:22.93).

Levi Grimm was Cass’ top runner with a time of 19:36.88 for 13th place.

Cass County meet

Lewis Cass won the title with a total of 24 points, and Logansport came in second with 33. Both Caston and Pioneer had incomplete scores.

The Kings took four of the top 10 spots, only to see the Berries take five of the top 10 spots.

“Our girls were a little bit flat,” Cass coach Don Bonsett said. “They ran exceptionally well Saturday, but they weren’t as competitive [Monday] as we wanted to be. Logansport girls were vastly improved from the last time that I saw them. [Brian] Morrill’s group was really out to get us.”

Cass runners Jenna Yeakley (21:33.36), Gabi Carney (21:51.19) and Sharaya Woodmansee (22:05.90) finished 1-2-3.

“It was the second time that Yeakley was our No. 1 runner, now she is county champion, and it was a good win for her,” Bonsett said.

Cass’ Breanne Robertson was sixth (23:13.52), and rounding out the Kings’ top five runners was Cami Weaver, who placed 21st in 26:55.77.

Logansport was led by Megan Martin with a fourth-place finish in 22:58.33, followed by Kelsey Hosler (fifth, 23:10.30), Carina Lange (seventh, 23:19.07), Bailey McIntire (eighth, 23:25.78) and Maddi Zartman (ninth, 23:53.21).

Pioneer’s top runner was Kaitlyn Cover with a ninth-place finish in 23:39.06, and Caston’s top runner was Kara Smith, who placed 11th in 23:53.76.

Volleyball

Pioneer 3, Tri-County 0

The Panthers improved to 4-0 in the Midwest Conference after sweeping the Cavaliers 25-12, 25-6, 25-15.

“It’s a good conference win,” Pioneer coach Rod Nies said. “We are trying to get healthy and stay healthy for the final push of the season. Hopefully, we can push far into the tournament.”

Cortney Hanson led Pioneer with 13 assists, nine kills, five digs and three aces. Hillary Sharp had six digs and four kills. Gabi Dunlap had five kills and five digs. Tara McWherter had 15 digs. Lindsey Miller came up with 12 assists and Sarah Dorris contributed seven kills.

Logansport 3, Lafayette Jeff 0

With the help of Kiley Victor, Logansport swept Lafayette Jeff in three sets, 25-14, 25-14, 25-19.

Victor led the Berries (10-4) with 14 digs and 13 kills. Katie Champion added 16 kills and seven digs, Alaina Page contributed 30 assists, Sydney Bullard had four kills and three blocks, Nakeya Penny came up with four blocks and McKenzie Mills and Bailey Kelley each had six digs. Kelley also had four aces.

“Victor had an outstanding night. She gave a great performance in the back row. She played very smart,” Logansport coach Jamee Jones said. “We do have some people that need to be more consistent with their level of play. [But], it was the most complete [match] that we played all year. I was happy with how we played.

“Page did a nice job for us setting. She had a couple of nice dumps there. She was feeding the girls nicely, keeping the ball moving along the net.”

Boys soccer

Winamac 1, Culver 1

Trailing 1-0 at halftime, Winamac senior Paul Hettinger scored his first career goal with less then 15 minutes left in the match to tie it at 1-1. Payton Windsor got the assist.

The Warriors’ goalie Zach Markley had eight saves.

“Zach has been a godsend,” Winamac coach Mark Eber said. “He’s still learning at keeper, but he gives us an athleticism that we were missing before, which allows him to make some saves like he did [Monday].

“I am happy for Paul to get the goal, and it came at a good time for us. The kids fought hard and deserved a win, but w e have to settle for the tie. I hope this just whets their appetite for winning … rivalry games like this are good for that.”
