Logansport’s baseball team had a big turnaround on Thursday night in a win over Kokomo at Jim Turner Field.

The Berries, who suffered a 21-0 loss at Kokomo on Tuesday night, recorded a 10-8, comeback win over the Wildkats on Thursday night.

Matt McKay hit a three-run home run in the bottom of the sixth inning that held up for the game-winning hit. Matthew Metz pitched three perfect innings of relief to improve to 2-0 on the season. The Berries improved to 7-9 and 2-2 in the North Central Conference, while the Wildkats fell to 10-4 and 3-1.

“I was really nervous going in because of the drubbing we had taken on Tuesday night,” Logan coach Jim Turner said. “I was worried how we’d respond. We got the air cleared with a meeting [Wednesday] because we were really devastated. That game really bothered us. Nobody took it too well. I was worried because it’d be easy to just cash it in. Then the rains came [Wednesday night]. After the rain stopped, I had some kids knock on my door because they wanted to practice. I saw a glimmer of light out of a dark tunnel. They came out to hit and had to dodge the rain drops.

“Then they came out ready to play [Thursday]. It was just really a pleasant win. It took a load off of my mind, and I know the kids felt the same way.”

Logan trailed 8-6 entering the bottom of the sixth when Metz was hit by a pitch, Evan Clem singled and Nate Champion hit an RBI double before McKay’s three-run bomb.

Metz fanned five of the nine straight batters he retired.

“That was a big performance by Matthew Metz to shut them out they he did,” Turner said. “That was just outstanding.”

McKay scored three runs total in the contest. Jon Tierney went 2-for-4 with a double, an RBI and a run scored. Jake McCord went 2-for-4 with an RBI.

The Berries travel to Richmond Saturday for a doubleheader.

The Berries will host Lafayette Central Catholic at 5:30 p.m. on Thursday, May 14.

Maconaquah 10, Cass 7

The Braves recorded the upset in Bunker Hill to improve to 3-7. The Class 2A No. 5 Kings fell to 9-4 and 1-2 in the Mid-Indiana Conference.

Cass junior ace Damon Foreman, who entered with a 4-0 record and a 0.30 ERA, got the start but lasted just 1-3 of an inning. Foreman missed the start against Western earlier in the week with arm soreness and didn’t have his good stuff against Maconaquah according to coach Greg Marschand, who added Foreman has a doctor’s appointment today to check out what’s ailing his arm.

Caleb Green led the Braves with three hits including a home run. Devin Shafer had two hits including a homer. Michael Brooks had a double and a single.

Cam Cummings homered and doubled for the Kings. Drew Fowler homered and singled, and Foreman added a double.

“Obviously [Maconaquah] came out with their bats and ripped the ball on us pretty good,” Marschand said. “Our kids came back, but leaving 10 guys on base was the biggest difference in the game. We tried to fight back a little at a time, but anytime they get 10, 11 hits on you, it’s tough to do. Any time we get nine hits and seven runs, with our pitching we should get the job done.”

Softball

Cass 13, Maconaquah 1 (5 innings)

Anna Tweed led the Kings to the win in Walton. The senior pitched a one-hitter and didn’t allow an earned run, and she helped her own cause by going 3-for-3 with a double and two RBIs.

Adrienne Ayers added a base hit and three RBIs for Cass (5-6, 1-2 MIC). Mallory Cummings had a double and two RBIs, and Ellie Cain added a double.

Ashley Wohlford had a double for Maconaquah.

Girls tennis

Marion 5, Logansport 0

The Berries’ No. 2 doubles team of Caitlin VanCuren and Haleigh Johnson played the closest and longest match of the night before losing 3-6 in the third set.

Taylor Johnson, Peyton Zehner and Maddie Jones dropped singles matches for Logansport (6-5). The No. 1 doubles team of Megan Rozzi and Morgan McCloskey played a competitive match but eventually lost 6-2, 6-3. The varsity record is now 6-5.

Logan’s JV won 3-2. Susie Cox picked up a singles win while both the No. 1 doubles pair of Katie Workman and Kearstin Tocco and the No. 2 doubles pair of Heidi Bender and Krista Reiff won their matches. In other action, Natalie Hines, Allison Shepler, Claire Blaser and Babs Bengel won doubles matches.

Lewis Cass 3, Western 2

The Kings improved to 5-0 and 3-0 in the MIC with the win in Walton.

Tiffany Skarda won 6-0, 6-0 at No. 1 singles, Jaclyn Hyman won 6-0, 6-3 at No. 3 singles and Alisha Allison and Abby Ropes won 6-0, 6-1 at No. 1 doubles for the Kings’ three points.

Cass’ JV won 4-1 to move to 7-1. Sharaya Woodmansee, Ashley Johnson and Katy Bowser won singles matches. Cami Weaver and Casey Robertson won their doubles match. In other matches, Megan McCall, Kim May and Morgan Rechkemmer each were victorious.

Boys golf

Lafayette Jeff 151, W. Lafayette 165, Logansport 206

Brett Davis led the Berries with a 48 at Kampen on the Purdue campus.

Other Logan players included Jacob Yeoman (49), Zac Eastburn (53), Braxton Shidler (56) and Alex Overway (56).

Pioneer takes second in 4-team meet

West Central (184) topped Pioneer (201), North White (221) and South Newton (260) in a four-team meet at Pine View.

Pioneer’s Ty Shrontz earned medalist honors with a 40. Other Pioneer players were Brent Gady (48), Casey Franklin (49) and Nathan Kistler (64).

Peru 157, Tipton 161

The Bengal Tigers’ Terry Smith fired an even-par 35 at Tipton Municipal G.C. to win individual honors.

Ethan Eckelbarger (40), Taylor Smith (41) and Travis Smith (41) rounded out Peru’s 157 team score.

“It wasn’t a bad match for us,” Peru coach Doug Muzzillo said. “We played pretty decent. I think it was the best nine-hole score for us this year.”

Keegan Gray led Tipton with a 39, followed by Micah Voorhis (40), and Jake Henry, Marcus Tishner and Tyler Nation each shooting a 41.

Tipton coach Kenny Day liked the conditions of the course.

“It was a good score,” Day said. “It was a good night to play. We finally got a decent night, and we always look forward to playing Peru. They’re always a very good team.”

Southwood 155, Maconaquah 173

Brennan Dexter led Maconaquah at Etna Acres, Southwood’s home course, with a 40. Andy Baldwin shot 41 and Ian Shivley, Cameron Royal and Garrett Shields each shot 46.

Medalist Josh Teulker carded a 37 for Southwood.

Boys track

Pioneer 82, West Central 50, North White 24

The Panthers recorded nine first-place finishes in their three-way win in Francesville.

Nate Grigsby was a quadruple winner for the Panthers (21-10), winning the long jump, high jump and 200 and was part of the first-place 4x100 relay team.

Bryce Kiser won the shot put and discus and was also part of the winning 4x100, as was Riley Thimlar and Cody Winn. Thimlar also won the 100, Braxton Baker took the 110 hurdles and Cameron Cover won the 3,200.

Miami Invitational

Maconaquah edged Cass in a close meet at Maconaquah involving the three Miami County schools and the Kings. Maconaquah scored 73, Cass 70, Peru 59 and North Miami 49.

For the Kings, Jeff Plank won the 110 hurdles (:15.6), Trinity Eckelbarger won the 300 hurdles (:43.8), Josh Knutson won the 200 (:23.7) and Matt Eckelbarger won the long jump (19-1.25).

“We had some people that set some personal bests which is really good because they’re starting to peak towards the conference and leading to the sectional,” Watkins said, noting the MIC meet is Tuesday at Northwestern. “A lot of my point getters are young guys so it’s good to see them improving their times and having them again for next year.”

Girls track

Miami Invitational

Maconaquah (79) edged Peru (76) and Cass (72) for the top spot in the four-team invitational at Maconaquah. North Miami (15) rounded out the field.

Shyann Szabo led the runner-up Bengal Tigers, winning the 100 dash (13 seconds), 200 dash (:27.4) and 400 dash (1:04) and running the anchor leg on the winning 1,600 relay team (4:30.9). Kelsey Quin, Kelsey Lilla and Kaleigh Reyes joined Szabo on the 1,600 team.

Also for Peru, Tiffany Raber won the 100 hurdles (:16.8), Taylour Kintner won the 1,600 Run (5:55.8) and Leanne Jamison took first in the 300 hurdles.
