PREP ROUNDUP: No. 7 Winamac falls against Culver
Delphi records win over Seeger.
Winamac’s girls basketball team was defeated by possible sectional opponent Culver 51-44 Tuesday night at home.
The Class 2A No. 7 Warriors fell to 2-1 on the season, while the Cavaliers improved to 2-0.
“I think the key to the game was that because of their height, we were forced to have to shoot from the outside,” Winamac coach Jim Swaney said, “and we shot 3 of 18 from 3-point land. We were going to have to hit some shots from the perimeter to have a chance, and we just didn’t hit enough of them.”
The Cavaliers were led by 6-foot forward Gwen Zehner’s 22 points and 6-3 forward Patrice McBee’s 16 points.
“If Culver keeps improving, they would be a force in the tournament because of their size,” Swaney said. “It’s very difficult to get the ball inside when there’s a 6-3 player and a 6-footer in there.”
If the two teams happen to meet again, Swaney said, “We’re gonna have to hit shots from the outside. We’re not gonna get a lot inside because we just don’t have that much size.”
Allie DeFries led the Warriors with 15 points. Jordan Brandt and Sarah Redweik scored 11 apiece. Redweik pulled down a team-high 10 rebounds and Whitney Schmicker added nine.
“I was proud of the kids coming back. We were down six, eight points, and got back within two on a couple occasions and had shots, they just didn’t go in,” Swaney said. “Then down the stretch we had to foul.”
Winamac travels to Rensselaer on Saturday night for a 6:30 p.m. JV tip-off and an 8 o’clock varsity tip-off. The game was moved from Friday to Saturday because Rensselaer’s football team is playing a semistate game.
Delphi 48, Seeger 40
Jordayn Jargstorf had 16 points and nine rebounds to lead the Delphi over visiting Seeger.
Brittany Rhodes added a double-double with 11 points and 12 rebounds for the Oracles (1-1).
Brianna Hensley led the Patriots (1-2) with 16 points, and Kelsey Swisher had 13.
W. Central 43, LaCrosse 21
The Trojans moved to 2-0 with a win at LaCrosse.
Riley Cervenka led the way with 16 points and 13 rebounds. Rylie Pfledderer added eight points.
Wrestling
Carroll 45, N. White 32
The Cougars won their season opener in Flora.
Montana Gangwer (152), Kameron Casto (171) and Brandon Weber (215) each won by fall. Braydon Kitchel (119) won by a 4-2 decision. Trey Overholser (112), Tyler Powell (189) and Dalton Marvin (215) won by forfeit.
Girls swimming
Northwestern 115, Carroll 69.5
Olivia Wenisch recorded three first-place finishes for the Cougars, winning the 50 freestyle and being a part of the winning 200 and 400 freestyle relay teams.
Lauren Nesbitt won the 100 backstroke and was part of the winning 400 free relay team. Hannah Brewster and Emily Fritz were each part of both winning relay teams. Bridget Peden was part of the winning 200 free relay team.
