Logansport’s wrestling team went 3-1 at its Early Bird Tournament Saturday, tying Lafayette Jeff for the best record on the day.

The Berries opened the day with their lone loss to the Bronchos, 43-27. They then defeated Northwestern 51-30, Maconaquah 62-15 and Winamac 47-36.

Jeff’s lone loss was to Northwestern, 45-35. The tourney is usually a six-team affair, but West Lafayette did not compete because its football team is still playing.

The Berries had four wrestlers go undefeated on the day. Andrew Tocco (103 pound weight class), Brandon Preston (112), Dalton Christensen (171) and Derrick McQuiston (189) each went 4-0. Logan Baldini (125) and Kegan Clark (heavyweight) both went 3-1.

“We wrestled Jeff first and we didn’t really wrestle well,” Logan coach Frank Patacsil said. “We wrestled better each match. By the end of the day we had a lot of positive things out of it. ... All the teams were pretty competitive.

“Overall it was not bad for three weeks into the season. We’re pretty pleased with the performance but we told the kids we have a lot of work to do.”

Winamac went 0-4 on the day. Besides the Warriors loss to the Berries, they were also defeated by Northwestern 48-33, Jeff 42-26 and Maconaquah 44-36.

Zach Dix (heavyweight) went 4-0 on the day for the Warriors. Nick Fritz (119), Robert Hartley (125), Garrett Chapman (130) and Shawn Mickey (135) each went 3-1.

“We had four weight classes open but as far as wrestling on the mat the guys did really well as far as matching up,” said Winamac coach Chad Compton, who added three of the four open weight classes should be filled up by the middle of the season.

“There’s always room for improvement but I can see us improving a lot. We had some guys wrestle well against really good competition. Quentin Chapman [who went 2-2 on the day] faced some really quality wrestlers, and I can see him beating those guys in the future. We’ve got things to work on, but I was happy with the way the team progressed from the beginning of the day to the end. At the beginning of the day I was worried but by the end I could see that if we continue to keep progressing I see some good things happening.”

Carroll went 4-1 on the day. The Cougars defeated Taylor 70-10, Wabash 64-16, Madison-Grant 64-18 and Mississinewa 60-22. They were defeated by Eastern 60-29.

Trey Overholser (103), Montana Gangwer (152) and Jared Collins (160) each went 5-0 on the day for Carroll.

Tri-County tournament

Carroll won the tournament, beating North Newton 47-37 in the semifinal round, then knocking off the host squad 38-36 in the championship.

Tri-County led Carroll 36-34 and had possession of the ball with 16 seconds to go in the final when the Cougars’ Jessica Yoder stole the ball near the 10-second line and drove in for a game-tying score. After Carroll regained possession under Tri-County’s basket with 2.4 seconds to go, Quinci Eller grabbed a floor-length pass from Abby Reinke and hit a turnaround 10-footer at the buzzer to give the Cougars the win.

Carroll was led in scoring by Eller with 14 points. Yoder followed with 12 and Reinke had eight — all in the second half. 

In the Cougars’ semifinal win, Eller scored 17 points, Reinke had 11 and Yoder had nine.

Rochester 56, Caston 24

Caston dropped to 1-3 on the season with a loss to Rochester in Fulton.

Emily See led the Comets with 10 points and Haley Markley and Jessica Showley added six apiece.

Abbie Malchow led the Zebras (0-3) with 17 points.

Delphi 40, Clinton Prairie 29

Delphi used the assistance of 18 free throw attempts in the final period to its advantage to finish with a 19-12 spurt to finally put Clinton Prairie (2-1) away for a win at home.

Whitney Arion led the Oracles (3-1) with 11 points.

On Friday night Delphi won at North White 56-45. Jodayn Jargstorf posted a career-high double-double with 28 points and 15 rebounds to lead the Oracles.

Jargstorf hit 12 of 15 free throws as the Oracles (2-1) shot 24 of 39 from the line in a game that had 48 fouls called.

Ashlee Ruemler had 16 points and Katie Maple added 11 to lead the Vikings (0-3).
