Logansport’s girls basketball team defeated possible sectional opponent Harrison 52-33 Tuesday night in West Lafayette.
The Berries (6-1) led just 21-17 at halftime before outscoring the Raiders 31-16 in the second half en route to the convincing win.
“We didn’t make our free throws in the first half, and it was the kind of game where we needed to make our free throws if we wanted to stretch the lead out to 10,” Logan coach Jerry Hoover said. “In the second half we got the lead to seven, and then we changed our press and went on an 8-2 run that got it to 12.
“They’ve got an all junior and sophomore team. And they’re not prolific scorers. So once we got a 12-point lead on them, it’s difficult for them to come back, especially with [Jasmine] Penny and [Jennifer] Tierney in there and their big players were in foul trouble. Tierney played a very good game at the front of the press. That doesn’t show in the stats, but she caused other players to pick off passes.”
Penny led the Berries with 29 points, eight rebounds, four blocks, three assists and three steals. Tierney scored seven points and McKenzie Mills added six. LuQueena Roe had eight assists and three steals.
Harrison, which is hosting this year’s sectional, fell to 0-10.
Logansport hosts Anderson on Saturday.
Caston 31, Northfield 17
Emily See scored 14 points to lead the Comets to the win on the road.
Brittany Offenberger had seven points and Jessica Showley added six for Caston (3-7). Chelsea Sivits and Haley Markley added two markers apiece.
“I’m real happy with the way we played,” Caston coach Richard Scully said. “We did a nice job of balancing things out and had really smart passes and were patient with the basketball. It worked out well for us.”
Northfield dropped to 4-5.
Caston, which won the JV game 17-12, hosts West Central on Thursday.
Northwestern 59, Pioneer 38
The Panthers fell to 4-5 with the loss to the Purple Tigers in Royal Center.
“I felt like we played as well as we could have,” Pioneer coach Darren McKaig said. “We didn’t shoot as well as we needed to, but Northwestern is a really good team.
“We hung with them. It was 29-22 at halftime. In the fourth quarter we cut it to 11 at 42-31 with five minutes left. We changed our defense up to try to get back in it and they rattled off some points.”
Kelsey Williams and Morgan Shanks led the Panthers with 12 and 10 points, respectively. Katie Galbreath and Kattie Lee each pulled down six rebounds.
Northwestern improved to 6-4.
Pioneer travels to Rossville Thursday.
Delphi 42, Cass 36
Jordayn Jargstorf had 17 points and seven rebounds to help Delphi coach Dan Dawson earn his 100th career coaching victory.
Whitney Arion added 12 points and six steals as the host Oracles (7-4) used a 14-5 third-quarter surge to overcome a 3-point deficit at halftime en route to the victory over Cass (0-11).
Arion also hit 7 of 8 free throws, but her consecutive free throws made string was snapped at 23 with a miss in the third quarter.
Kinsey Weaver led the Lady Kings with 12 points, while Abby Ropes added 10.
W. Central 52, Frontier 46
Rylie Pfledderer and Makenna Hamilton scored 11 points apiece to lead the Trojans (7-2, 3-1 Midwest Conference) to the win over the Falcons (2-7, 2-3). Alysha Faler added nine.
Boys basketball
Culver 53, Winamac 36
Zoe Bauer scored 22 points and Larry Clingler added 14 to lead the host Cavaliers past the Warriors in a matchup of possible sectional opponents.
The Cavs (2-3) jumped out to a 20-9 lead after one quarter of play, and the Warriors (1-5) were never able to fully recover.
“We just had a bad first quarter where we had a lot of miscommunication on defense and gave them easy baskets,” Winamac coach Bill Ball said. “Offensively I thought we forced things early. I thought after the first quarter we played better, especially in the second half.
“They’re a good team. They almost beat Rochester their first game out. We just came out and didn’t get things done on defense and let guys have shots that we worked on trying not to give up. To Culver’s credit, they knocked them down. We just need a better start.”
Steven Wagner led Winamac with 13 points. Zach Shidler added six.
“We had some guys in foul trouble,” Ball said. “It was kind of the same old story as our other games.”
Winamac hosts Rossville on Saturday night.
No. 8 Peru 66,
Tippecanoe Valley 38
The Class 3A, No. 8-ranked Peru Tigers (4-1) won their third consecutive game, while dealing Vikings (2-4) their third straight loss.
“Tippecanoe Valley is a formidable team, and they have been in many games this year,” said Peru coach Eric Thompson, a former TV standout. “They could have been easily 3-2 instead of 2-3 [heading into Tuesday’s contest] after losing in overtime Saturday [to John Glenn]. We had to come in focused, and ready to play, especially on the road.”
The Tigers got off to a quick start with a 15-6 lead at the end of the first quarter, they built it to 32-10 at halftime. Tippecanoe Valley came back in the third a little only to see Peru lead 46-22 at the end of three quarters. The Tigers went on to win 66-38.
Justin Engel led Peru with 20 points. Wes Zimmerman followed with 15 points and six rebounds.
Peru hosts Eastern in its Mid-Indiana Conference opener Friday.
