— The action was intense Saturday as the area’s best wrestlers converged on the Berry Bowl to participate in the annual Logansport Regional. When competition had concluded at the end of the day, 12 areas grapplers had their tickets punched to advance to the Merrillville Semistate next weekend.
Logansport and Lewis Cass each advanced four wrestlers to Merrillville. Winamac will send two further into the tournament while Caston and Pioneer will each send one.
Three of the regional champions crowned were from the area schools, as Logansport, Caston and Winamac had one apiece. At 113 pounds it was sophomore Sheldon Corcoran from Logansport, at 126 was senior Dalton Overmyer of Winamac, and at 160 was senior Graham Redweik of Caston.
Corcoran (28-7) pinned Jackie Chambers of Lafayette Jeff with one minute left in their match to move forward as a No. 1 seed.
“During my matches today I just tried to control the guys I went up against,” he said. “But mostly I just tried to have confidence in myself. These guys were really tough though.”
Overmyer (38-1) battled it out with Dillon Rehn of West Central in the final before winning by pin 3:28 into the match.
Redweik (42-2), who was upset in a sectional semifinal last weekend, was able to regroup Saturday. He defeated Dakotah Miller of Delphi by a 12-5 decision in the title match.
“I kind of hurt my ankle this past week and I thought that might have been it for regionals, but it felt pretty good [Saturday],” he said. “My coaches had me ready and we were able to get it done. Hopefully, next week we can go up there and get the same results.”
The Berries had three wrestlers finish in the runner-up spot. At 132 Frank Martinez was defeated 14-1 by Cody Alderman of Delphi. Chris Espinoza at 152 gave up an escape with time about to expire in losing 5-4 to Adrian Brown of Lafayette Jeff. At 170 Dalton Christensen also dropped a close one 11-10 to Ethan Davis of McCutcheon.
Finishing third in regional competition was Justin Johnson from Pioneer at 126 and Gage Garpow from Winamac at 120.
Lewis Cass had four wrestlers claiming fourth-place finishes. At 106 was Zach Layer, at 113 Jarrett Carden, at 138 Cody McGehee, and at 170 Jake Collins.
Logan coach Frank Patacsil was content afterwards.
“Everyone wrestled pretty competitively. We had some guys lose some really close matches and we’re sending four guys to Merrillville,” he said. “We would have liked to have gotten some more kids up to semistate, but four is a nice number. We’ll get back in practice Monday and start working them hard and hopefully we can get four kids down to state after next week.”
