MONTICELLO — On paper, Logansport’s wrestling team was an underdog entering Saturday’s Twin Lakes Sectional.
But it certainly didn’t turn out that way when the two-time defending champion Berries went toe-to-toe with their opponents.
The Berries got the type of performance coach Frank Patacsil was looking for as they rolled to their third straight sectional championship and 32nd overall — fifth most in the state.
“We’re extremely happy that we won,” Patacsil said. “It was a total team effort. We had 14 guys place. We had several kids wrestle above their seeds. So everything we talked about we needed to do, we did.
“But we can’t sit there and gloat about this. We need to start working for next week.”
Logan won by 21 points over runner-up Twin Lakes. The Berries had four first-time individual champions, three who didn’t enter as No. 1 seeds but controlled throughout against their smaller-school opponents in the championship bouts.
Sophomore Sheldon Corcoran picked up the Berries’ first sectional title of the day in the 113-pound weight class. He entered as the top seed and defeated Twin Lakes’ Mason Tribbett 14-8 in their title match.
Corcoran (24-6) controlled throughout in his title match.
“One, just listen to the coaches, that helped me out a lot,” Corcoran said. “The guy fought really hard. I kept on trying to tight-wrist, but he wasn’t going to let it happen. Overall he put in a good fight.”
Senior Frank Martinez then pinned Caston’s Kyle Harvey in the 132-pound title match for Logan’s second title of the day. Martinez led 5-0 when he made an extremely quick move and stuck his opponent with :51 left in the second period.
Martinez (28-6) entered as the No. 2 seed but came away with the win against Harvey (33-7).
“I was motivated. My coach said, ‘He’s never seen anything like you.’ And thanks to him, I was fighting it out, believing in myself,” Martinez said. “Some people sometimes say I get lucky, but since I was little I’ve watched WWE and my favorite wrestlers. I just create moves sometimes and just go out there and do something.”
Muscle-bound senior Chris Espinoza (31-6), Logan’s lone NCC champ, entered as a No. 2 seed but dispelled that idea with a 7-0 win over Rensselaer’s Jay Resendez (31-6) in their 152-pound title match.
“I’ve got to tell you, when I first came here I doubted myself a lot,” Espinoza said. “But I wanted to win not just for my team, but for my mom, my dad, my entire family’s here. I could have just gone and cried under so much pressure. But I’m not wrestling for myself anymore, I’m wrestling for everybody that I know.
“I’m going to see if I can qualify for state and see where it goes from there.”
Senior Dalton Christensen (33-4) was Logan’s final champion on the day, knocking off top-seeded Logan Wuethrich (35-4) of West Central by a 7-0 decision.
“I started out with intense emotions. I was ready to go,” Christensen said. “I kind of think he wasn’t. I controlled the first and second period and let the time run out in the third. … He was a tough kid. It just feels good to pull out the victory.”
Christensen is confident going forward.
“I’m going to go to the state tournament,” he said.
Pioneer junior Izaak Johnson overcame an early deficit in his 106-pound title match to defeat South Newton’s Osvaldo Herrera by a 5-3 decision.
The match was tied 3-3 when Johnson was awarded two points because Herrera was called for stalling.
“I kept pressuring into him and he got called for stalling because he didn’t do anything,” Johnson said. “I just kicked it in. It feels good.”
Johnson (39-4) also recently defeated Herrera (28-3) in the Midwest Conference title match.
Winamac senior Dalton Overmyer won the 126-pound title, defeating West Central’s Dillon Rehn by a 6-4 decision. The key to the match was Overmyer (35-1) locking Rehn (35-5) into a cradle hold for nearly 45 seconds in the first period. Rehn was able to avoid the pin but couldn’t overcome the points for the near-fall.
“This kid’s really tough. He’s beaten me before. I just went out there and did all I could and beat him,” Overmyer said.
Overmyer was also a sectional champion his sophomore year.
Caston senior Graham Redweik entered with just one loss on the season but was upset in a 160-pound semifinal match against Rensselaer’s Michael Roe, falling by a 6-4 decision. Redweik (39-2) recovered in the third-place match and pinned South Newton’s R.J. Whaley (25-3).
“He got into a tough match with the Rensselaer kid and he had I would say a questionable call on locked hands, and that put him into overtime,” Caston coach Dave Redweik said. “The kid already took him down once and he just had a good shot on him and got him. It happens. He survives to wrestle another day.”
With the third-place finish Graham Redweik now seemingly has a tougher route out of next week’s Logansport Regional.
“We’re looking at it like you’ve got to beat them anyway,” Dave Redweik said.
Roe (27-10) went on to edge Winamac’s Richie Doty 2-1 in the title match of two surprise finalists. Doty is now 25-13.
“He’s just coming on strong,” said Winamac coach Chad Compton of Doty. The Warrior coach added Doty might have been a victim of some stalling tactics that weren’t called in his title match.
Cass senior Cody McGehee (30-5) was pinned late in the second period when he was trailing 4-0 by Rensselaer’s Jeffrey Martin (35-4) in their 138-pound title match. Logansport senior Ross Deitrich (24-12) was pinned by West Central’s Jordan Culp (32-0) in their 285-pound title match. Deitrich nearly had a cradle locked but was then reversed and pinned by the undefeated Culp, a senior.
The top four individuals in each weight class advanced to next week’s Logansport Regional.
Also advancing for the Berries with third-place finishes were Cody Clark (145 pound weight class), Yojhan Aguirre (182) and Jacob Baber (195) and fourth-place finishes by Kane Henn (106) and Daniel Dominguez (120).
Also advancing for Cass were third-place finishers Zach Layer (106), Jarrett Carden (113) and Jake Collins (170) and fourth-place finishers Kolbie Cox (132), Luke Knutson (195) and Grant Maxwell (220).
Winamac advancers include third-place finisher Gage Garpow (120) and fourth-place finishers Jordan Bitterling (138) and Quest Fritz (285).
Pioneer’s Justin Johnson (126) also advanced with a third-place finish.
Twin Lakes had four champions in Blake Denton (120), Christian Winkle (182), Kevin Winkle (195) and Brandon Schultheiss (220). Skyler Ringen (152) also won a title for Rensselaer.
Logan won the team title with 215 points, followed by Twin Lakes (194), Rensselaer (168), West Central (148), Cass (107.5), Winamac (107.5), North White (84), Caston (56), Pioneer (53), South Newton (32) and Frontier (18).
Logan faces Harrison at 6 p.m. Wednesday at the Logan team regional. This is the last year the IHSAA is holding a team regional, as it will be individual-only moving forward after this season.
