Berries come up aces

Champion-led Logan tops Class A No. 1 Pioneer

— Pioneer’s volleyball team, in part, earned the No. 1 ranking in Class A by knocking off six-time defending state champion Michigan City Marquette two weekends ago.

The Panthers ran into a different kind of volleyball juggernaut in Logansport Tuesday.

The Berries have had a recent run of NCAA Division I talent go through the program, and led by Katie Champion’s 17 kills, 15 digs and two aces, they knocked off the Panthers in three games, 29-27, 25-13, 25-22.

“Hat’s off to Logansport, they played great,” Pioneer coach Rod Nies said.

Logan product Kelsey Victor is a freshman volleyball player at Valparaiso University, and Nies believes Champion, a 6-foot junior, and Alaina Page, a 6-foot sophomore, have D-I potential as well.

“Champion is a fabulous player and has a very, very bright future in the game of volleyball. I’m looking forward to watching her play in college,” Nies said. “Alaina is a great player, too. She did a great job.”

Page finished with eight kills in the contest, and McKenzie Mills and Kiley Victor, Kelsey’s younger sister, each posted six kills. Erin Angle collected 22 digs and three aces, and Alyssa McPherson had 35 assists.

“I’m pleased with the performance of all my girls,” Logan coach Jamee Jones said. “Kiley stepped up huge this week. Katie has kind of put her under her wing and showed her a few tricks, and so that’s really helped with Kiley. She had a great performance. McKenzie Mills was putting it where the other team isn’t. She came through huge. Jen Tierney had some nice hits. Alaina was putting the ball down.

“And of course Katie, what can you say? That’s our go-to girl. But they all were our go-to kids [Tuesday], and that’s what I’m proud of. Overall I’m very happy with our performance.”

Nies blamed himself for his squad’s performance.

“Obviously I didn’t have the girls prepared and ready. We have to go back to the drawing board,” he said. “It was totally different team compared to when we played Crown Point a couple weekends ago.

“They deserved to win. They obviously outplayed and outhustled us. They made the plays when they needed to.”

The Panthers (7-2) jumped to a 16-10 lead in game one, but the Berries (4-0) stormed back with a 10-4 run to tie it at 20-all. Pioneer later missed on three set-point opportunities, and Logan made them pay when Champion floored a kill to give Logan the 29-27 win in the opening game.

The Panthers were never really in the second game, but they jumped out to leads of 13-8 and 14-9 in game three. But Logan closed the set with a 14-8 run and didn’t let the Panthers back in the match.

“We got a couple leads there in the first and third games and got stuck in one or two rotations,” Nies said. “Our ball control left us while we struggled. Hopefully we’ll bounce back from this.”

Cortney Hanson dished 33 assists for the Panthers. Kattie Lee floored nine kills, Kelsey Williams had seven and Marissa Centers added five.

Last season Pioneer won the first matchup between the two squads before Logan claimed wins in the Logan Classic and the county tournament. Pioneer is again competing in the Logan Classic Saturday, so the teams could meet again then.

Rochester 3, Cass 0

The Kings dropped a 25-13, 25-20, 25-19 decision at Rochester.

Abby Ropes had four kills and 14 digs for Cass. Emily Loe collected 15 digs.

Sydney DeHaven posted 13 assists and three kills, and Brook Hill had four kills.

“[Tuesday] was disappointing,” Cass coach Cheryl Lane said. “Rochester came out strong and intense and we did not retaliate the way we should have. We had a couple of questionable calls go against us early and the girls let it affect their entire match. We were not mentally tough enough to persevere in the match.

“Rochester is scrappy and not one of their girls hesitated to go for a ball or hit the floor when they needed too. We were just outplayed.”

Winamac 3, Culver 0

The Warriors defeated a possible sectional opponent at home, 25-16, 25-11, 25-20.

Rachael Franko led the way with 15 kills and five digs. Allie DeFries added nine kills and seven aces.

Sarah Redweik dished 32 assists. Emily Paulsen had eight kills and three blocks, and Katy Anspach added five kills.

“We played very well in the first and second games, but the third game we didn’t work real well together,” Winamac coach Cathy DeFries said. “We had some miscommunication offensively but still came out on top.

“We had to take advantage of Culver when McBee was in the back row. There were times when we made too many mistakes with her in the front row and it could have been costly, but we pulled it out due to their errors. We have to force the errors, not sit back and wait for them to make them.”

Logan 29, Maconaquah 35, Kokomo 60

The Berries moved to 3-0 on the season with the wins at Highland Park in Kokomo.

Logan’s Kyle Overway was the individual winner and Daniel Arteaga placed fourth. Travis Palmer was sixth, Tate Gellinger placed seventh and Michael Anderson finished 11th to round out Logansport’s scorers.

“The times were slow as we have been really putting in some hard miles and the course is a tough one, but our boys competed well and many of them are only just beginning to learn how to run a 5K race,” stated Logan coach Chuck LaDow.

Cody Franklin, Vinny Nunes and Allen Russell each found the back of the net for the Comets in the win in Fulton.

Goalkeeper Max Foreman had seven saves in what coach Nars Sanchez said was “another stellar day in goal for us.

“Cody Franklin scored early which I believe made it easier for us to manage the game,” Sanchez added. “We got the result but we still have not put a whole game of quality soccer together in back-to-back halves.”

Carroll 4, Rossville 0

The Cougars moved to 4-1 with the win in Flora.

Elliot Packard, Jarvis Simmons, Tim Ruby and Alex Atkisson each found the back of the net. Packard, Simmons and Gavin Hancock each added an assist. Jeremy Hayes recorded the shutout and finished with two saves.

Maconaquah 3, H. Heights 2

The Braves began the Mid-Indiana Conference portion of their schedule with a one-goal win over Hamilton Heights.

Jada Powlen led the Comets with a 56. She was followed by Chelsey Dague (68), Tierney Rentschler (71) and Katie Williamson (82).

Boys tennis

Maconaquah 3, Wabash 2

The Braves (6-1) jumped to an early 3-0 lead on wins by No. 2 singles player Ryan Frantz (7-5, 6-2), No. 3 singles player Tanner Christner (6-1, 6-2) and the No. 2 doubles team of Andrew Bowman and Chris Ayers (6-4, 6-1).

“There were a couple of matches that could have gone either way so we are a little nervous thinking that when sectional comes around, we may have to play them again,” Maconaquah coach Tim Maiben said.
