PREP SPORTS: Overway opens cross country invite season in style

Logan, Pioneer volleyball teams finish 2-3 at Logan Classic.

Logansport senior Kyle Overway cruised to a win in the Berries’ first cross country invite of the season Saturday in Fulton.

Overway won the Caston Invitational in 16 minutes, 50 seconds, which was 15 seconds faster than runner-up Blake Mills of Carroll.

“He ran the first two miles with the Carroll kid and then surged the last mile,” Logan coach Chuck LaDow said. “He’s been running 80 to 90 miles a week. Right now he’s training through some of these races and is worried about running fast in October.”

Overway was a state finalist a year ago and co-owns the school record of 15:50 with Mark Courtad. LaDow said Overway plans to pick up his pace and “run a fast one” next Saturday at the Maconaquah Invite with the competition to include runners from Noblesville.

Logan placed second in the boys event as a team with 87 points behind first-place Rochester (63). Carroll placed third (109), Cass was eighth (229), Pioneer was 12th (325) and Caston was 14th (352) out of the 17 teams that placed. Winamac had an incomplete.

Also for the Berries, Daniel Arteaga placed fourth (17:31), Travis Palmer was 21st (18:27), Tate Gellinger was 29th (18:42), Michael Anderson was 35th (19:00), Brandon Preston was 48th (19:33) and Alex Calisto was 59th (20:13).

“We really thought we had to beat Carroll to win,” LaDow said, “but Rochester slipped in there. They didn’t have anybody finish in the top five but they had some kids packed tight right after that.

“I couldn’t have asked our kids to run better. Our freshmen are maturing and learning to run races. Daniel Arteaga set his PR by 30 seconds. He’s doing a great job filling in the No. 2 spot.”

Also for Carroll, Jordan Tooley finished seventh (17:34), Tallis Bowers was 19th (18:21), Brian Bordner was 34th (18:57), Mitch Whitham was 51st (19:40) and Cory Ritter was 73rd (20:55).

Nate Wilson led Cass with a 10th-place finish (17:47). He was followed by A.J. Soloway (37th, 19:04), Matt Lane (54th, 19:43), Madison Carney (66th, 20:29), Matt Vernon (74th, 20:59) and Kalin Linback (76th, 21:14).

Cameron Cover paced Pioneer with a 40th-place finish (19:09), Dylan Bice was 56th (19:57), Eric Simons was 58th, Matthias Phillips was 92nd (22:05), Jordan Robinson was 99th and Phillip Whitlock was 111th (24:52).

Justin Cousins led the host Comets with a 39th-place finish (19:07). He was followed by Graham Redweik (68th, 20:40), Zack Smith (78th, 21:17), Conner Martin (79th, 21:18) and Aaron Morrow (107th, 23:36).

Winamac runners included Ralph Thomas (42nd, 19:16), Bryant Larkin (47th, 19:30) and Caleb Schmicker (55th, 19:48).

Harrison Invite

Peru’s runners took 25th in the 27-team field and had five of their top seven runners set personal bests. Jordan Garretson (17:53) led Peru’s contingent. He was followed by Clint Hazlett (19:36), Ryan Carter (20:02), Tyler Kintner (20:14), Shane Garretson (20:18).

“I am very proud of these runners because they train hard on a daily basis and their results from [Saturday] prove that,” Peru coach Eric Isenburg said.

Girls CC

Caston Invitational

Bremen won with 45 points, followed by a top three of Tri-County (58) and Cass (91). Logan placed sixth (188), Carroll was ninth (213), Pioneer was 10th (220) and Winamac was 11th (244). Caston had an incomplete.

Bremen’s Hope Jordan won in 19:58.

Ashley Baber led the Kings with a sixth-place finish (21:18). She was followed by Sharaya Woodmansee (10th, 21:34), Jenna Yeakley (14th, 21:50), Bre Robertson (21st, 22:30) and Brooke Robertson (51st, 24:30).

Sarah Lowry paced Logan with a 28th-place finish (23:03), followed by Jess Kreighbaum (40th, 23:32), Maddie LaDow (42nd, 23:50), Bailey McIntire (43rd, 23:55), Alli Morrill (53rd, 24:31), Lari Rutschmann (55th, 25:05) and Kayla Warner (66th, 26:04).

“The girls got a big confidence boost [Saturday] with some good time drops,” Logan coach Brian Morrill said. “We will just keep working at it and see how much more improvement we can squeeze out before the important meets come late in the season.”

Bridgett Peden placed fifth (21:12) to lead Carroll. She was followed by Maria Lewis (20th, 22:29), Stephanie Strawcutter (64th, 25:48), Jackie Tussinger (72nd, 26:34) and Storm Dreadfulwater (91st, 32:08).

Leading the way for Pioneer was Bailey Farrer (22nd, 22:40) and Angie Moss (23rd, 22:41). They were followed by Sarah Lassiter (59th, 25:14), Christine Baker (70th, 26:19), Melissa Baker (80th, 27:29) and Larissa Walker (90th, 31:19).

Dagny Zupin led Winamac with a 34th-place finish (23:11). She was followed by Danyell Bailey (45th, 24:03), Julia Foster (62nd, 25:25), Micha Sabec (63rd, 25:47), Nicole Johnston (75th) and Katy Sommers (79th, 27:06).

The host Comets were led by Kara Smith (44th, 24:02), followed by Holly Kingery (58th, 25:12), Maggie Daily (74th, 26:41) and Andrea Mangelsdorf (84th, 27:47).

Times weren’t available for every runner.

Girls CC

Harrison Invitational

Peru finished 19th in the 27-team invitational as four of the seven Bengal Tigers set personal bests. Emilie Hobbs lead the Bengals with a time of 21:41, followed by Keyia McConahay (21:49), Taylour Kintner (22:35) and Gena Fisher (23:36).

“We continue to improve our times each meet,” Peru coach Eric Isenburg said. “One of our team goals is to get better each meet. I am very happy for the kids that [it has happened] by 20-30 seconds each meet this week.”

Volleyball

Logan Classic

The host Berries placed runner-up to Noblesville. Pioneer was third and Manchester placed fourth.

The Berries defeated Huntington North (25-9, 25-9), South Bend Washington (25-8, 25-7) and Manchester (25-17, 25-21) before losing to Noblesville (25-21, 25-23) in the title match.

The Panthers, who are ranked No. 1 in Class A, defeated Portage (25-15, 25-20), lost to Noblesville (25-20, 19-25, 16-14) and then defeated Knox (25-18, 25-22) to advance to the third-place match, where they defeated Manchester (25-16, 25-16).

Logan suffered its first loss of the season in the title match and is now 7-1 on the year. Berry coach Jamee Jones wasn’t particularly pleased with how her squad played the entire day.

“We played flat the whole day,” she said. “We had too many serve receive errors. In that last match we had 13 hitting errors. I don’t think we were locked in and focused. To the girls’ credit they made it to the final match and played tough. We’ve just got to find a way against the bigger teams to make it all come together. I was a little disappointed in the way we played [Saturday].”

A factor for the Berries was that starting setter Alyssa McPherson missed some time with acute tendinitis and is questionable for Tuesday’s match at Harrison.

Katie Champion had 28 kills on the day and eight aces in the win over Washington. Alaina Page had 20 kills on the day. McPherson collected 50 assists.

Pioneer is now 11-3 on the season after going 3-1 in Classic play.

“I was really impressed with my girls on the day,” Panther coach Rod Nies said. “We were in a tough pool with Noblesville, Knox and us. You could’ve flipped a coin to see who’d win that pool with those three teams. We were fortunate to beat Knox. We had our chances against Noblesville but couldn’t get over the hump. But we played very well and stayed focused the whole day. We played good, solid, fundamental volleyball.”

Kelsey Williams had 29 kills, eight blocks, seven aces and four digs on the day for Pioneer. Kattie Lee added 24 kills, 12 digs, six aces and four blocks.

Cortney Hanson collected 68 assists, six blocks, four aces and four digs, and Tara McWherter contributed 19 digs and eight aces. Hillary Sharp had 10 kills, eight digs and three blocks, Marissa Centers added 10 kills and five blocks, and Cassidy Corn had six kills and 10 blocks. Ashlee Feltis added seven digs.

KV Invite

Winamac went 3-1 on the day and placed third at Kankakee Valley. The Warriors opened with their lone loss, 25-22, 25-22, to Calumet Christian.

“I think we underestimated them,” Winamac coach Cathy DeFries said. “They are a very strong program and played very well. We got behind in the first game and just couldn’t battle back fast enough. I thought we had them in the second game but had some costly errors at bad times that helped them get back in the game. It was disappointing losing our first match because that consequently took us out of the running for first place. After that match we won all the others in two, so in my opinion that was the championship match.”

Winamac went on to beat Griffith (28-26, 25-17), Merrillville (25-16, 25-19) and North Judson (25-22, 25-20).

“I was proud of the effort our girls gave [Saturday],” DeFries said. “It was a long day with a lot of waiting time between games. I really wanted a chance to play KV for the championship since we haven’t gotten past them the last two years, but the pool play just didn’t allow for that.”

Sarah Redweik dished out 68 assists on the day. Allie DeFries had 50 kills and five aces, and Rachael Franko added 38 kills and 22 digs.

Emily Paulsen had 18 blocks and Katy Anspach added 11 blocks. Sarah Doty collected 16 digs and five aces.

Boys soccer

Roncalli 3, Logan 0

W. Lafayette 3, Logan 1

Logansport scored just one goal on the day in falling to 2-4-2 on the season.

In the opener, the Berries trailed 1-0 late before Roncalli scored two goals in the last minute.

“We played a good first half, gave up a goal on a corner kick,” Logan coach Mike Turner said. “In the second half we dominated play and had great possession. We had a lot of shot opportunities. Then we gave up two goals in the last minute. I’m very disappointed in our focus.”

Christian Cardenas scored Logan’s lone goal of the day against West Lafayette.

“We had first-half woes in that match,” Turner said. “We gave up three goals and had mental mistakes again. The second half was better, no goals.

“Both games were tough. We are having more mental mistakes than tactical or technical.”

Plymouth 8, Winamac 0

The Warriors dropped to 0-5 with the loss.

“We hung with them for 25 minutes,” Winamac coach Mark Eber said. “Unfortunately the goals kind of snowballed on us.

“We played decent soccer, but minus one defensive starter and then losing another for the day in the second half hurt us. We were already down score-wise and we have had a heck of a time putting our planned starting lineup out there at the same time. The kids played hard and continue to improve. We just need to put some shots in the net and get healthy.”

Football

Pioneer 56, S. Newton 6

The Class A No. 5 Panthers recorded a dominating win Friday night at South Newton for their 29th straight Midwest Conference win.

Nate Grigsby had five touchdowns on the night for Pioneer. The senior halfback rushed for 123 yards and three TDs. He added a 10-yard TD reception and a 36-yard interception return for a score.

Joey Miller had 69 yards rushing and a touchdown, and Owen Dorris had 64 yards rushing and a TD. Dylan Carden added a 14-yard TD run, and Oakley Lewellen was credited for a safety.
