Gonzalez leads Comets past Warriors

Caston QB Douglass leaves game with rib injury.

FULTON — Despite losing junior quarterback Quentin Douglass early in the second quarter to a possible season-ending rib injury, the Comets held on to defeat Winamac 20-15 on a cold and rainy senior night at the Comet Crater Friday.

Jeremy Gonzalez took over at quarterback and put the team on his shoulders, rushing for 205 yards on 38 carries and two touchdowns.

Corey Moss intercepted Warrior quarterback Zach Shidler and returned it 57 yards for a touchdown in the first period.

Shidler’s second interception in the fourth quarter was just as costly, coming at the hands of Jake Kingery in the Warrior end zone with 7:12 to play. The wet conditions played havoc for both teams, with a total of six turnovers in the game.

Gonzalez engineered a 13-play, seven-minute drive down the stretch to keep the Warriors at bay and preserved the Comets’ sixth victory of the season.

Tyler Katschke rushed for 81 yards on 23 carries and two touchdowns for Winamac.
