Logan thwarts Cass

Penny, Berries surge past Kings in 4th quarter

Cass fell just short of getting its first win over Logansport since the Basil Mawbey era Wednesday night at the Logansport Savings Bank Invitational.

Antonio Penny scored 10 of his game-high 28 points in the fourth quarter to lead the Berries to a come-from-behind 56-54 win over the Kings. Penny played the entire fourth quarter with four fouls.

It was Logan’s third win in a row to start the season that wasn’t decided until the closing minutes.

“We just kind of make it interesting, I guess,” Logan coach Mark Victor said.

Logan (3-0) will face Pioneer (1-1) for county bragging rights Friday night following the consolation game between Cass (1-1) and Caston (0-2).

Cass’ Blake Hadley missed on a contested driving shot with 4 seconds left that could have tied the game. After the miss there was a wild scramble for the ball and time ran out on the Kings.

“Hadley is a guy that we want the ball in his hands because he makes things happen,” Cass coach Jon Kitchel said. “He can dish, he can get to the basket, he can get to the free throw line. It just didn’t work out for us.”

The Kings led by as much as 40-33 late in the third quarter. They took a 50-48 lead on an Aldridge basket with 5:10 left in the game.

Nate Bullard hit two free throws to tie the game at 50-all for the Berries, and back-to-back baskets by Penny and Todd Yeoman gave them a 54-50 lead.

Austin Keisling, who led the Kings with 22 points, hit two free throws with 1:53 to go to pull the Kings back to within two points.

Logan was then able to take over a minute off the clock, and Penny hit 1 of 2 free throws with :33 remaining to make it 55-52.

Victor DeJesus scored on an assist by Ryan Aldridge to bring the Kings to within 1 with :18 left, and Penny again 1 of 2 free throws with 13.9 seconds remaining to set up the final sequence of the game.

Keisling scored 15 of his 22 points in the first half. Hadley added 11 points for the Kings. Aldridge had nine points and eight rebounds, and Jordan Miller scored six points on two 3-pointers in the fourth quarter.

“We couldn’t stop Keisling. He had 15 at the half,” Victor said. “He was just ripping us, dribbling through us and knocking down shots. I like the way our kids stepped up in the second half.”

Bo Bullard was also in double figures for Logan with 11 points. Jayson Higgins added nine.

Higgins hit his lone 3 of the game when his shot with 0.7 seconds left on an inbounds play in the first quarter gave the Berries a 14-11 lead after one.

They led 20-11 when Penny picked up his third foul of the game with 5:14 left in the second half. He sat out the remainder of the half, and the Kings closed with a run to get within 24-23 at halftime.

Keisling and Hadley opened the second half with back-to-back 3-pointers for the Kings, who led the rest of the third quarter.

The fourth quarter featured four ties and seven lead changes.

The Kings shot just 15 of 26 (57.7 percent) from the foul line, which Kitchel thought was the key stat of the game.

“The bottom line is in close games, you’ve got to knock down your free throws, and we didn’t do it,” he said. “If you’re going to beat a team like Logansport at their place, you’ve got to do the little things, and that’s really what cost us the game.”

The Kings shot just 37.2 percent from the field for the game but was 7 of 11 from 3-point range. Logan shot 42.2 percent from the field, led by Penny’s 9 of 22.
