Caston tops NW, advances to sectional final

Comets will face West Central tonight with title on the line.

Marli Leazenby scored 21 points to lead Caston’s girls basketball team to a 53-39 win over host North White in a Class A sectional semifinal game Friday night.

The Comets (13-9) will face West Central (13-9) at 7:30 p.m. tonight in Monon with the title on the line.

Leazenby drilled four 3-pointers on the night for the Comets, who led 22-17 at halftime and 41-31 after three quarters.

“Marli shot it really well,” Caston coach Carl Davis said. “North White did a good job of taking away Ingrid Martinez for the most part and made things difficult on her. Marli hit her fist two shots and the girls knew they needed to get her the basketball because she had the hot hand.”

Anna Brown added 12 points for Caston. Martinez had eight and Mickayla Rans added six.

Darien Eccles had 16 points for the Vikings (7-15), and Lacey Hendress added 15.

“North White played very well and hit shots,” Davis said. “We were very improved on the defensive end of the floor. To allow them to score 39 points, you would think it wasn’t our best night defensively. But we forced them to take some tough shots and they hit them. I think to hold them to 39 is a good number on this type of night.

“Our guards did a good job of taking away the passing lanes and giving the North White guards problems, and the help was always there. The defense set the tone.”

West Central defeated Tri-County 39-19 in the later semifinal Friday night. Trojans enter tonight’s contest having won 7 of 8, while the Comets have won 6 of 7.

“West Central is definitely one of the hottest teams in our area. They’re playing extremely well,” Davis said. “They put a lot of pressure on you. We need to be strong with the basketball and fill spots very quickly in order to handle their pressure. Offensively they move the ball very well. Their point guard is extremely quick and does a great job creating on both ends of the floor. It’ll take a complete team effort.”

West Central defeated Caston 38-34 in the regular-season matchup on Jan. 4 in Francesville. The Trojans are the two-time defending sectional champions.
