Helen Been Benefiel

ROCKFIELD — Helen Been Benefiel, 91, Rockfield, died at 5:45 a.m. Wednesday, Oct. 31, 2012, at St. Elizabeth Hospital East, Lafayette.

Born Oct. 25, 1921, in Bloomington, she was the daughter of Forrest and Minnie Alexander McKamey.  

She graduated from Monticello High School in 1939. In 1940, she married Richard Paul Been, who preceded her in death in 1998. In December 1997, she married Morris Benefiel, and he preceded her in death in 2003.  

She worked at the Logansport State Hospital, Logansport, in the personnel department, then at the First National Bank of Logansport. She later worked at the Barnett Bank in Jacksonville, Fla., and also worked in the Treasurer’s Office in Carroll County. Helen was also a Mary Kay Cosmetics consultant.

She was a member of Rockfield Christian Church and a 50-plus-year member of the Helen Bonebrake Chapter 437 Order of Eastern Star, a member of the American Legion Auxiliary Post 75 in Delphi, Rock Creek Extension Homemakers Club, served as County Chair and past president of the Democrat Women’s Club of Carroll County, and was a past member of the Carroll County Literary Club.

She is survived by one son, Stephen Richard Been, of Atlanta, Ga.; two daughters, Nancy Been Sweat (husband, Sonny) of Delphi, and Katherine Been Waldrep (husband, Dave) of Delphi; 10 grandchildren, Andrew Been, Stephen F. Been, Jonathan Been, Betsy West, Susan B. Shiver, Jennifer Higbee, Laura W. Graham, Christina Houser and Kyle Thomas; 20 great-grandchildren, Eliza West, Christopher West, Hannah Been, Sara Lynn Been, Courtney Been, Merrill Been, Jessica Been, Emily Been, Hampton Shiver, Elliott Shiver, Katherine Been, Wilson Been, Elizabeth Higbee, Andy Higbee, Mathew Thomas, Walker Thomas, Hannah McKamey Graham, Barry Rowen, Ella Rowen, and Leslie Rowen; and a niece, Joyce Guyer Giver, of Fort Wayne.

She was preceded in death by a sister, Marjorie Guyer, and a grandson, Kevin E. Thomas.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Monday at Cree Funeral Home in Camden with visitation one hour prior to the service. Pastor John Rigle will officiate, and burial will be in the Brown Church Cemetery, near Rockfield.
