Dennis Eugene Barnhisel, 71, of Roann, went peacefully to be with his Lord Jesus Christ at 6:50 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 10, 2012, at his home.
Dennis was born Nov. 18, 1940, in Peru, to Doine Barnhisel and Clara Powell Barnhisel. He married Cathey K. Rush on Aug. 25, 1963, in Mexico.
He was a 1958 graduate of Gilead High School.
Dennis was an active member of the Mexico Church of the Brethren.
Dennis was a farmer and enjoyed all that working land entailed. He also worked for Hogue Engines of Akron, building engines. He loved going to the Indy 500 for the past 53 years. He was a basketball official for 25 years. He restored a 1931 Model A that he enjoyed showing at many car shows, and he belonged to The Blacktop Cruisers Car Club. He loved and honored his family; all who knew him felt his sweet and gentle spirit. He was especially proud of his three grandchildren and enjoyed keeping up with their activities.
He is survived by his wife, Cathey; son, Brent and wife, Lana Barnhisel, of Brownsburg; daughter, Lisa and husband, Paul Petrass, of Oro Valley, Ariz.; one brother, Richard and wife, Lela Barnhisel, of Lexington, Ky.; one sister, Roberta and husband, Robert Struck, of Roann; a sister-in-law, Caroline and husband, Kraig Dawalt, of Logansport; mother-in-law, Marjorie Rush, of Peru; three grandchildren, Erica Barnhisel, Joel Petrass and Megan Petrass; and several nieces and nephews.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Sunday at Hartzler Funeral Home, 305 W. Rochester St., Akron, with Michael Barnhisel officiating. Burial will be in the Gaerte Cemetery, Gilead.
Friends may visit with the family from 5 to 9 p.m. Saturday at the funeral home.
