Richard E. “Dick” Sands, 79, Logansport, passed away peacefully at home, surrounded by his family, at 4:05 p.m., on Saturday, March 16, 2013.
Born Dec. 8, 1933 in Burnettsville, he was the son of Samuel T. and Frances L. Sauer Sands.
He was married on Sept. 8, 1957 to Donna M. McElheny, who survives, in Logansport.
Dick founded, owned and operated Sands Wholesale for 25 years, Dick received his bachelor’s degree from Tri-State University.
A veteran of the United States Army, he served during the Korean conflict.
He was a member of the Baptist Temple, American Legion Post 60, Am-Vets, a Life Member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 3790 and a 56-year member of Tipton Lodge No. 33 F&AM.
Dick was a former member of the Logansport Eagles and Moose lodges.
During the 1970’s and 1980’s, Dick was very active in the local Democratic Party and later on he was a fundraising consultant for the State Democratic Party.
Dick was a wonderful cook and enjoyed mushroom hunting, gardening, playing cards, and reading, especially about history. He enjoyed a good joke and loved having a good laugh.
He enjoyed his family, particularly, the apples of his eye, his grandchildren.
Also surviving is a son, Christian (Tawna) Sands, Peru; daughter, Kelly (Mark) Ruhl, Logansport; grandchildren, Kyle Ruhl and Kristen Ruhl (fiancé, Kile Westerman); brothers, Ben (Sue) Sands, Carmel, Tony Sands, Logansport; sisters, Ellen (Dean) Chamberlain, Logansport, Roberta Bowyer, Logansport, Clara (Jim) Humphrey, Lafayette, Peg (Ed) Unger, Metea, and Jo (Jim) DeHaven and Geraldine (Wayne) Landis, all of Logansport.
A brother, Bob Sands, preceded him in death.
The funeral will be at 3 p.m. Wednesday, March 20, 2013, at 3 p.m., at Kroeger Funeral Home, with Reverend Howard Wade officiating.
Visitation will also be from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home. Burial with full military honors will be in Mount Hope Cemetery, Logansport.
