NORTH MANCHESTER —
Esther Louise Smoker, 89, North Manchester, formerly Logansport, passed away peacefully at 7:20 p.m. Friday, Jan. 4, 2013, in her residence at the Peabody Retirement Community.
Born in her parents’ Fulton County home on Dec. 6, 1923, she was the daughter of the late Loris E. and Helen K. Johnson Easterday. She was married to Donald M. Briggs on June 7, 1943. He preceded her in death in 1955. She later married George M. Altman who preceded her in death in 1993. On June 21, 2001, she married Ernest Smoker, who survives in North Manchester.
A 1941 graduate of Fulton High School, Esther had worked as a seamstress at H.W. Gossard many years ago. She had also worked as a coil winder at the former RBM.
Esther was a member of the former Third Street United Methodist Church while living in Logansport. When her children were young, she was very active in the PTA in the Logansport schools. She later moved to Peru where she belonged to the Eagles Auxiliary. For eight years, Esther participated in a bowling league and was active in the Senior Center activities in Peru.
Surviving with her husband are four children and their spouses, Robert L. and Helen Briggs, Las Vegas, Nev., Marilyn and Dennis White of Speedway, Roseanna and Tom Kelley of Bunker Hill, and James and Christina Briggs, Richmond, Va; 16 grandchildren, Richard, Kimberly, Timothy, Heidi, Mark, Melissa, David, Laurie, Christine, Bridget, Stacey, Brandon, Brent, Brianna, Christina and Camille; 25 great-grandchildren, Molly, Tiffany, Julianna, Jordan, Ashley, Bailey, Alex, Ava, Lilly, Joshua, Mandy, Kaylie, Mariah, Natoshia, Madison, Dylan, Brittany, Mia, Joey, Nikolai, Sebastian, Indy, Mason, Carson and Gracen; and four great-great-grandchildren, Deegan, Dawson, Peyton and McKenzie.
She was preceded in death by her son, Richard, who was Bob’s twin brother; one sister, Wilma Halpeny; and two brothers, Richard Easterday and Don Easterday.
A funeral service will be at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at Fisher Funeral Chapel, Logansport, with Daniel Gray officiating. Burial will follow in the Mount Hope Cemetery, Logansport.
Friends may call from 4 to 7 p.m. Monday at the funeral chapel where an Eagles Auxiliary service will be held at 6:30 p.m. Visitation will also be held one hour prior to the service on Tuesday.
