Catherine M. Nufer

WINAMAC — Catherine M. Nufer, 83, Winamac, died at 7:48 a.m. Thursday, Feb. 9, 2012, at Pulaski Memorial Hospital, Winamac.

Born Oct. 4, 1928, she was the daughter of Daniel and Emma Shorter Winter. Catherine married James Nufer on June 4, 1960, in Medaryville. He died May 7, 2001.

She was a member of St. Peter’s Catholic Church in Winamac.

Catherine had worked at Medaryville Garment Factory and also as a bookkeeper at Mayhew Elevator.

Catherine was an exceptionally gifted woman who used her gifts in service to others. She greatly enjoyed creating a warm and inviting home, doing much of the work herself. Her beautiful flower and vegetable gardens provided beauty and food for family and friends. A marvelous seamstress, Catherine, for many years, made clothing for herself, her husband and others. Her beautiful afghans now grace the homes of many, received as gifts from Catherine or donated by her as fundraisers for the many charitable causes that she embraced. Never a woman of considerable means, Catherine’s great generosity, like the widow’s mite in sacred Scripture, enriched the lives of many. May she rest for all eternity in the warm embrace of the God whom she loved so fervently and served so well.

The family expresses deep gratitude to those who cared for Catherine throughout the challenging days of her illness.  Special thanks to Dr. Bates, Dr. Johnson and Dr. Curtis; to the wonderful and caring staff of Pulaski Memorial Hospital, to her neighbors and to special friend, Theresa Joseph.

Surviving are brothers, Frank (Joan) Winter, Monterey, and Daniel Winter, Galveston; and sisters, Sister Clarise Winter, Kokomo, and Agnes (Leo) Siemens, Medaryville.

She was preceded in death by her husband; parents; sister, Madelyn Martin; and sister-in-law, Myra Winter.

Funeral Mass will be held at 11 a.m. Monday at St. Peter’s Catholic Church, Winamac, with the Rev. Martin Sandhage officiating. Burial will be in St. Peter’s Cemetery, Winamac.

Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Sunday at Frain Mortuary, where the rosary will be recited at 7 p.m. A Scriptural Wake Service will immediately follow the rosary.

Memorial contributions may be given to the charity of the donor’s choice.

Online condolences may be offered in the guest book at www.frainmortuary.com.
