Raymond A. ”Hitch” Hitchens

Raymond A. ”Hitch” Hitchens, 89, Logansport, passed away at 9:25 a.m. Wednesday, Feb. 6, 2013, at Millers Merry Manor.

He was born Sept. 15, 1923 in Logansport to Burley George and Jesse Catherine Hausman Hitchens.

On Nov. 23, 1949 in Logansport, Ray married Mary J. Sims, who survives.

Mr. Hitchens retired in 1983 as a service technician for the Northern Indiana Public Service Company, or NIPSCO.

He was a member of Calvary Presbyterian Church, NIPSCO Crackerbarrell Club, American Legion Post No. 60, Elk’s Lodge No. 66, Tipton Masonic Lodge No. 33 and the Scottish Rite of Fort Wayne. Ray was a former Logansport basketball player under Coach Cliff Wells and received the Dewey Woodling Award for mental attitude. He was also a basketball season ticket holder for over 50 years and also avidly followed the Berries Baseball team. Ray had also served in the Navy during World War II.

Other survivors include one son, Kent (Anita) Hitchens of Carlsbad, N.M.; one daughter, Debra K. Wicker (Art) Calix of Fenton, Mo.; two grandchildren, five stepgrandchildren and seven step-great-grandchildren.

One brother, Art Hitchens, preceded in death.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday, March 2 at Gundrum Funeral Home, with Pastor Doug Mankell officiating. The Logansport Elk’s Lodge will be holding an Elk’s Lodge service just prior to funeral rites. Hitchens’ body will be donated to the anatomical department at IU Medical School.

Visitation will be from noon until the time of service on March 2. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Calvary Presbyterian Church Scholarship Foundation.
