Alven R. Prough Sr.

Services for Alven R. Prough Sr., 88, Walton, will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday in Gundrum Funeral Home.

He died at 9:46 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 17, 2008, in the emergency room at Logansport Memorial Hospital.

Born April 21, 1920, in Wells County, he was the son of Arvie Harvey and Nora Alice Herron Prough. He was married Dec. 10, 1941, in Corvalias, Ore., to Helen Virginia Shirley, who preceded death in January 1994 after being married for 52 years.

Alven retired after 40 plus years from 103 Operating Engineers, his latest project was working on the Hoosier Heartland Highway at the age of 74.

He was a 1939 graduate of Union Township High School, in Markle, where he was also a member of the basketball team. He was a member of Anoka United Methodist Church. Mr. Prough was a veteran of the U.S. Army serving in World War II in the 104th Infantry Division, which was called the Timberwolf Division and also nicknamed the Wolves in Sheep’s Clothing. He was a life member of American Legion Post 418 as well as a proud union member. He truly enjoyed cutting wood, and was considered a master sawyer, and loved the outdoors, his garden, fruit trees, reading, his loving family and his two cats, Copper and Flash.

Surviving are children, Alven R. Prough Jr. and wife, Cindy, Kokomo, Shirley K. Nordstrom and husband, Ray, Logansport, Sam Prough and wife, Dorma, Logansport, Eulalia Yerkes and husband, Don, Camden, and Kimberly Brown and husband, Pat, Logansport; grandchildren, Amy Pegg and husband, Jon , Bunker Hill, Mandy Schave and husband, Scott, Kokomo, Aaron Prough, Logansport, Amber Johnson, Logansport, Paul Yerkes, Camden, Adam Yerkes and wife, Chrissy, Minnesota, Amy Marmolejo and husband, Jason, Minnesota, Kelly Bullick, Logansport, and Chris Brown, Logansport; great-grandchildren, Beth, Zach and Emily Pegg, Zoi and Sutten Schave, Austin Bullick, Madeline Caleb, Nolan and Wyatt Marmolejo, and Alexandra and Cohen Yerkes; and brother, Kenneth Prough, Merrillville.

He was preceded in death by two grandsons, Matthew Nordstrom and Timothy Prough; one sister, Opal Wiekle; and one brother, Lloyd Prough.

Pastor Jim Abbott will officiate. Burial, with full military graveside rites, will be in the Walton IOOF Cemetery in Walton.

Friends may call from 2 to 5 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.

Memorial contributions may be made to American Legion Post 418 or Anoka United Methodist Church.
