Marion E. ‘Elb’ Hiner

PERU — Services for Marion E. “Elb” Hiner, 92, Peru, were held at 11 a.m. today in Flowers-Leedy Funeral Home.

He died at 5:52 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 17, 2008, in Hickory Creek at Peru.

Born May 10, 1916, in Royal Center, he was the son of Earl and Maude Brewer Hiner. He was married in 1936 to Sarah D. Barth, who preceded in death in January 1971.

A graduate of Peru High School, he was co-founder of the Miami Trucking Co. and co-founder of Hi-Berry Horse Stable. He was a veteran of the U.S. Marine Corps during World War II. In 1948, Elb joined the Peru Police Department and retired in 1978 as chief.

He was a member of St. John’s Lutheran Church and Peru Maennerchor. He also was a member of the Moose Lodge, American Legion, Eagles Lodge and Elks Lodge. He was a car guy (mostly Fords) and loved building race cars and racing them. He was well respected on the racing circuit.

Surviving are one son, Gary Hiner and wife, Kay, Logansport; and grandson, Brice Hiner, Chicago.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, Jim; and four sisters, Mabel, Miriam, Margaret and Barbara.

Pastor Kenneth Greenwald was to officiate at the services. Burial was to be in Lutheran Cemetery in Peru.

Memorial contributions may be made to St. John’s Lutheran Church.
