Edward Dawson Cochley, 84, Wabash, Ind., died at 7:10 a.m. Sunday, Jan. 6, 2013, at Autumn Ridge Healthcare Center in Wabash.
He was born Aug. 27, 1928, in Indianapolis, Ind., to Paul and Blanche (McAllister) Cochley.
Ed was a 1946 graduate of Logansport High School, and attended Logansport Business College from 1948-1950. He was in the US Army serving in Germany from 1946-1948 and in Korea from 1950-1951. He moved to Wabash in 1950. Ed married Genevieve Casida in Redford, Mich., on July 4, 1953; she died July 17, 2012. He worked for American Rock Wool, Diehl Machines, and Midwest Insulations, then 22 years for Art Metal, Datavue Products, and Swingline Co., retiring in 1991. He also worked at Snavely Machines in Wabash. Ed was a member of the First United Methodist Church, the Wabash American Legion, Wabash County Historical Society, Historic Landmarks Foundation of Indiana, and Past President of the Wabash Chapter of the AARP. He was the Coordinator for Meals on Wheels of Wabash from 1993-2011, and continued as treasurer and driver until his death. He for several years was an advisor for the local Junior Achievement organization. In 2009, Ed was named the Wabash County Hospital Healthcare Hero, and in 2010, he was named the Wabash County Chamber of Commerce Distinguished Citizen. He enjoyed bowling, photography, traveling, and reading.
He is survived by his daughter, Judy (Peter) Birkel of Noblesville; two grandchildren, Timothy (Alissa) Birkel of Pendleton, and Emily Birkel of Cincinnati, Ohio; two great-grandchildren, Sam and Henry Birkel, both of Pendleton; and several nieces and nephews in the Logansport and Indianapolis areas. He was also preceded in death by his parents, and two sisters, Martha Jamison, and Betty Szewczyk.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday at Grandstaff-Hentgen Funeral Service, 1241 Manchester Ave., Wabash with the Rev. Kurt Freeman officiating. Burial will be in Memorial Lawns Cemetery, Wabash. Friends may call 3 to 7 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home.
