Calvin B. Kitchell, 86, Rensselaer, formerly Wanatah, passed away Monday, Feb. 11, 2013.
He was born on May 10, 1926, in Deer Creek Township, Ind., the son of Charles and Rebecca (Beck) Kitchel.
Calvin was a U.S. Navy Veteran of WW II, serving on the USS Bostich and USS Summer, and earned his teaching and administration degrees from Ball State University and Purdue University.
He had worked as a teacher and principal for 40 years, retiring in 1983 from the Michigan City School Corporation.
On June 4, 1954, in Logansport, Calvin married Miriam “Mimi” Riggins who preceded him in death in 1993. He is survived by four children, Mark (Cheryl) Kitchell, Indianapolis, Barbara Kitchell, Holt, Mich., Chuck (Julie) Kitchell, Culver, and Mary Ellen Kitchell, Rensselaer, seven grandchildren, Sean, Adam, Andrew, Caroline, David, Aspen, and Jaimz, four great-grandchildren, Gabe, Erin, Charli and Bijou, and brother, Samuel Kitchel, Logansport.
He was preceded in death by his parents, son, Ronald, two brothers, George and Thomas, and two sisters, Roberta and JoAnna.
Services will be at 11 a.m. (CST) Thursday, at Moeller Funeral Home, Valparaiso, with burial to follow at West Point Cemetery, West Point. Visitation will be from 3 to 7 p.m. (CST) Wednesday at the funeral home.
In lieu of flowers, memorials are requested to the American Cancer Society or the Alzheimer’s Association.
