John J. Gilsinger


John J. Gilsinger, 91, Logansport, passed away at 4:30 a.m. Tuesday, Nov. 3, 2009, at his residence.

Born March 5, 1918, in Logansport, he was the son of John J. and Anna B. Muckenfuss Gilsinger.

John retired in 1981 as a hostler after 43 years of service with the Pennsylvania Railroad, Penn Central and Conrail. He was a member of the National Rifle Association and a 61-year member of the United Transportation Union (UTU).

A 1937 graduate of Logansport High School, John was also a veteran of the U.S. Army during World War II, where he served in Panama, New Guinea, the Philippines and the Occupation of Japan.

John had been a member of the former St. Bridget’s Church.

John liked to fish, taking many trips to Minnesota and Canada. He enjoyed watching most sports, mushroom hunting, gardening and travel.

John was a loving and sincere father, grandfather, uncle, and friend. He was a very giving person and especially enjoyed sharing his life with his grandchildren.

Survivors are son, Gary (Judy) Gilsinger, Logansport; grandchildren, Jason Gilsinger, Toponas, Colo., Tammie Chickdaunce, Lafayette, and Jesse (April) Gilsinger, Clayton, N.C.; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by brothers, Neil Gilsinger, Russell Gilsinger, Harley Gilsinger, Harold Gilsinger, George Gilsinger and Walter Gilsinger; and sisters, Theresa Grant and Rosemary Dawson.

Friends may call from 5 to 8 p.m. Sunday at Kroeger Funeral Home where services will be at 11 a.m. Monday with Father Michael McKinney officiating.

Burial will be in Mount St. Vincent Cemetery, Logansport.
