George Weldon VanMeter

George Weldon “Wad” VanMeter, 84, Logansport and formerly of Lucernedied at 10:10 p.m. Saturday, March 13, 2010, at Woodbridge Health Campus in Logansport.

He was born Dec. 24, 1925, in Cass County, the son of George F. and Lovie Ann Fiedler VanMeter.

He was a retired construction worker and the former construction superintendent for the Cass County Government Building.

He was a member of the Metea Baptist Church.

George was a Army veteran of the Korean Conflict. He was a 1943 graduate of Metea High School.

He was a life member of Elks Lodge 270, New Albany, and he was a member and past commander of Walton American Legion Post 418 and member and past chef de gare of Voiture 729 40 & 8. George served 20 years on the board of directors of the Cass County Mental Health Association and 18 on the board of the Memorial Center. He had been a member of Tipton Masonic Lodge 33 for more than 50 years.

Survivors include a sister, Betty Zimmer and husband Louis, Royal Center; a brother, Donald W. VanMeter and wife Marjorie, Woodstock, Ga.; several nieces and nephews; and several great-nieces and great-nephews

Two sisters, Martha Studebaker and Mildred Rans, and three brothers, Ernie, Walter and Danny VanMeter, preceded in death.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, March 20, 2010, at the Metea Baptist Church, with Rev. William R. Cordes officiating. Burial,, with full military graveside rites, will be in Zion Cemetery, Lucerne.

Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Friday at Gundrum Funeral Home and one hour prior to services at the church.

Memorials may be made to the Metea Baptist Church.
