Velma S. Thompson

ROCHESTER — Velma S. Thompson, 100, Rochester, passed away at 3:02 a.m. Tuesday, Nov. 27, 2012, at Hickory Creek, Rochester.

She was born on Feb. 11, 1912, in Middle Point, Ohio, the daughter of Lester and Pearl Spratt. She graduated from Salem High School in Northeast Indiana in 1929. She was a Registered Nurse, graduating from Lutheran Hospital, Fort Wayne, in 1933 and worked at Parkview Hospital, Plymouth. For many years Velma served as a volunteer for the American Red Cross Blood Bank.

She married Gates E. Thompson on Aug. 14, 1937, in Fort Wayne. He preceded her in death on July 13, 2002.

Velma was active in the Grace United Methodist Church, including the youth of the church, adult Sunday School classes, Women’s Auxiliary and the prayer group. She was a member of the Rochester Eastern Star Lodge. In the 1950’s she traveled with her family throughout much of the United States including a trip to Alaska in 1959. She liked gardening and working on the family genealogy. For many years she made wood fiber flowers and taught classes in her home teaching the craft to other women. She enjoyed playing cards, especially Canasta and Euchre.

Her favorite pastime was spending time with her family. She is survived by her children, Phil and wife Pat Thompson, Rochester; Linda Haskell, Liberty, Maine; and Bill and wife Brooks Thompson, Nashua, N.H. She dearly enjoyed the company and was loved by her nine grandchildren, 24 great grandchildren and three great-great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her brother, William A. Spratt, and granddaughter, Katherine Thompson Diedrichsen.

Funeral services will be conducted at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at Zimmerman Bros. Funeral Home with the Rev. Maurice Grindle officiating. Friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. Monday and one hour prior to the service at the funeral home. Burial will be in the Odd Fellows Cemetery, Rochester.
