LOGANSPORT —
Jean Ralph Smith, 96, passed away Saturday, Jan. 19, 2013, at The Cedars. Born in Logansport, Jean played for the 1934 state basketball championship team. There, he earned him a basketball scholarship to Northwestern, where he earned his bachelor’s degree in history.
He was a locomotive engineer with Pennsylvania Railroad for 37 years, retiring in 1977. He was a member of Brotherhood of Locomotive Engineers & Firemen, and Wildwood Racquet Club. Jean loved gardening, being outdoors, sports, and spending time with his family.
Surviving are his daughter, Silvia Jo Thorn, Fort Wayne; son, Andrew J. (Gwen) Smith, Clearwater, Fla.; sister, Maryellen Thorton, Brookston; and grandsons, Kenneth and Kevin Thorn, Bowie, MD.
Jean was preceded in death by parents, Ralph and Amy Smith; wife, Lois Smith; and brother, Mark Smith.
Private services were held. Burial was in Leo Memorial Cemetery, Leo.
