PUBLIC FORUM: Guns don’t make killers

— In his column on the gun debate (“Gun debate in need of compromise,” Dec. 24), Gordon Southern states “this is what I think, what do you think?”

I think he needs to check his facts. You can’t carry a gun on a work site without the employer’s permission. You can take a gun to work but it has to be left in the vehicle locked up our of sight in the parking area only. It cannot be taken out of the vehicle. It is illegal to carry a gun to an organized sporting event such as football game. Teachers, administrators and students in colleges can carry guns in some states but not in all states. In high schools and elementary schools teachers and administrators, not students, can carry guns with the school’s permission.

As for the Sandy Hook event, the only way to stop a bad guy with a gun is a good guy with a gun.

The National Rifle Association was founded in 1871 by a group of National Guard officers for the promotion of rifle marksmanship. Just recently the Supreme Court ruled that the Second Amendment is an individual right to keep and bear arms. Just because you carry a weapon does not mean you’re going to become a killer. You can have disagreements and arguments while carrying a weapon and not even consider using it. If you shoot someone because you are mad at him you have a mental problem. People who carry weapons take their use very seriously. As for you not needing a gun in your 33 years of teaching; that was then, this is now.

  • SOUTHERN: District boundaries show lack of respect

I can imagine no real reason why a county like Cass would be split up into three districts except to show it a lack of respect.

  • KNISELY: What are odds of that?

As you read this, I’ll be basking in the warm sun on a Florida beach. I’m not sure where you’ll be when reading this, but I’m pretty sure I’ll be coming out the winner. Seems only fair considering I was moving boxes in the rain just a few Sundays ago.

  • WOLFSIE: Writing on the walls

Sometimes when I am trying to think of an idea for my column, I just stare at the wall. That’s not a bad thing, because on the wall in my home office is a collection of special pieces of memorabi-lia that inspire me to write, reminding me of the talented people I have had the privilege to meet.

  • THEIR VIEW: Big Brother looms large in D.C.

The federal government, working under the cloak of secrecy, has been having a heyday at the expense of all Americans.
First we learn the IRS has been targeting conservatives — applications for tax-exempt status by tea party groups were wrongly singled out for extra scrutiny.

  • KITCHELL: Waste-to-energy a big waste of time

Had all of Logansport attended the Indiana Society of Professional Journalists Awards ceremony last month in Indianapolis, we all would have learned that the No. 1 editorial written in the state in the past year was about a subject that sounds familiar to Logansport residents.
