• To those who took the time to respond to a survey conducted by the Cass County Family YMCA and Logansport Memorial Hospital on health and wellness issues. Those responding helped the two organizations determine that personal motivation and time are the biggest obstacles to exercising more frequently and leading healthier, more active lifestyles. Now, the YMCA and Memorial Hospital face the challenge of creating new programs to help local residents overcome those hurdles and improve their general health.

• To Logansport junior Madison Baldini, who advanced to the IHSAA Gymnastics State Finals with a sixth-place finish on the balance beam at last weekend’s Harrison regional. This is the second year in a row Baldini will compete in the state finals and the sixth year in a row the Berries have at least one gymnast at the event. Baldini overcame a sprained ankle suffered two weeks before the IHSAA Tournament to reach state.

• To the organizers, performers and attendees of the “Rockin’ Out for Haiti” concert at Boondockers. The concert, which featured Aftershock, Twisted Riddlers, Rude Barb and the Beggars and Isolated Incident, was a fundraiser for the nation that was devastated by a Jan. 12 earthquake. The effort raised more than $600 that will be donated to Music for Relief, an organization founded by the band Linkin Park.

• To the 450 Cass County families who have chosen to participate in Indiana’s CollegeChoice 529 Savings Plan, which has experienced a 47 percent rise in participation since the economy’s backwards slide began in September 2008. According to Indiana Treasurer Richard Mourdock, Indiana is the only state to show a double-digit increase in the number of accounts during that period. You can set up an account in 15 minutes and in the process qualify for credits on your state income tax return.

United Way of Cass County announced this week that it had raised more than $600,000 in its most recent campaign. The campaign’s success is a testament to the generosity of local residents and to the great work of the United Way and its member agencies.
