Thorns & Roses

Thorns & Roses is a weekly feature highlighting the best and worst of the week in the opinion of readers and staff members. Suggested items may be submitted until noon Wednesday by calling Margo Marocco at (574) 732-5151.

Roses

• To the Logansport Performing Arts Council for lining up an exciting bill of fare for the McHale Performing Arts Center. Entertainment ranges from Gary Puckett offering a taste of the 60s in September, to Branson regular Dino Kartsonakis in October, the legendary Mickey Rooney in November and Sha Na Na in December. Something to look forward to.

• To Dave Wihebrink, CEO at Logansport Savings Bank, on receiving the Five Star Award from the Indiana Bankers Association. The bank was one of 34 statewide granted the recognition for its commitment to such things as volunteerism and community involvement, life-long learning, and issue advocacy.

• To Roger Bowyer, for allowing the public to visit Council Rock on his property at 5912 E. Country Club Road. All he asks is that visitors make their presence known to him first and avoid littering. Sounds fair.

• To everyone who participated in the Cass County Relay for Life at the Pioneer High School track. The event raised $84,000 for the American Cancer Society, honored cancer survivors and those who fell victim to the disease. We find strength in sharing.

• To the Cultural Explosion dancers who performed at the recent “Second Saturday” event at Little Turtle Waterway. You honor your Mexican heritage.

• To the estimated 120 participants in the 12th Annual River City Triathlon at France Park. Athletes came from throughout Indiana as well as Chicago, Virginia and Delaware. The local contingent made a good showing, especially 15-year-old Pioneer student Ryan Brice, who finished second overall and first in his age group. A fine showing.

• To the Logansport Police Department for sponsoring the annual Bicycle Safety Rodeo at Tower Park. A lot of children left having learned important safety lessons and several rode away on new bicycles, thanks to your generosity.

• To the emergency personal responding to the garage fire June 6 in the 2000 block of Smead Street. The blaze spread to a nearby tree, downed power lines and damaged two other garages, including one owned by Brandon and Melissa DeLorenzo. Melissa had nothing but praise for the job done by the police, fire, utility and telephone workers — and neighbors who kept her company while the fire was being doused. It was her first experience with a fire — and, hopefully, her last.
