Purdue, IU have best records in years

State Sen. Tom Weatherwax, R-Logansport, is supporting a bill to phase-out the state inventory tax over a 10-year period.

Notre Dame has defeated LSU 39-36 and could be smelling oranges in Miami.

Purdue’s graduation rates for football are the worst in the Big Ten, but Notre Dame’s are best in the nation. IU has improved from seventh to third in the Big Ten.

No. 11 Logansport defeated Huntington 62-44 in girls basketball as Brooke Howard scored 20 points.

Rochester’s Andrea Milliser scored 23 points in the Zebras’  77-41 victory over Caston.

On the 20th anniversary of the assassination of President John F. Kennedy, Logansport High School social studies teacher L’Dean Cornelius remembers how LHS students reacted that day. They wept. Cornelius says Logansport was quiet during the weekend after the assassination, and it was a slow time for business.

Eli Lilly has lost a $6 million federal lawsuit over its drug Oraflex.

Darryl Strawberry of the New York Mets has been named National League Rookie of the Year. He clubbed 26 homers and drove in 74 runs after spending the first month of the season in the minors.

Turkey dinners will be served at Harvey’s Drive-In from 7 a.m. to 9 p.m. Thanksgiving Day.

The grave of a Gen. William Wilson who served in the Battle of Tippecanoe still stands on the north bank of the Eel River about a half mile south of Chase Center. The general represented Cass and Carroll counties in the Indiana General Assembly and was a key confidante of William Henry Harrison when he was Indiana governor.

The “Doomsday Plane” that will be one of four presidential command posts in the air if America is under attack has landed at Grissom Air Force Base.

50 Years Ago

Indiana, behind a gutsy performance by a tailback pressed into duty as quarterback after the first play from scrimmage, rallied for a 15-15 tie against No. 8 Purdue. In Phil Dickens’ first season at the helm, the Hoosiers finished with their best record in 11 years. Purdue at 6-1-2 finished with its best mark since 1943. Purdue dropped to 11th in the ratings after the loss. Iowa moved up to No. 2 after defeating Notre Dame 31-21 and earning a Rose Bowl berth.

U.S. forces will remain in Germany.

More than $300 was stolen in a break-in at the new Monticello Eagles Lodge.

Rep. Charles Halleck will speak at the Jackson Township Elementary School dedication in Galveston.

Three barges loaded with Indiana oil refined for gasoline have exploded in the Ohio River.

Former Logansport City Judge and Cass Prosecutor Harry Tutewiler has died at 52.

A $400,000 campaign has been announced for the expansion of St. Joseph Hospital. Another $400,000 for the project will be provided through the Sisters of St. Francis, which operate the hospital at 26th and North streets. Another $400,000 will be provided through federal funds.

Bob Biddle, who previously coached at Middlebury, is preparing to launch his first team at Peru.

“Around the World in 80 Days” starring David Niven and Shirley MacLaine is playing at the Logan Theater.

Thanksgiving dinner will be served at the Sportsman Inn in Monticello for $1.25.

Turkey will be served to Logansport State Hospital, St. Joseph Hospital and Memorial Hospital patients on Thanksgiving, as well as to the Cass County Home and Cass County Jail inhabitants. Cass County Children’s Home residents will be fed stuffed pork chops.

Portable traffic safety signs will be used this year outside Logansport High School, where the Berries are still reeling from a season-opening loss to Winamac.

Harvey Roberts is the North Central Conference Coach of the Year after leading the Berries from ninth place to the championship in one season. Mike Maple, Jerry Pfaff and Tom Shook are all first-team NCC selections.

William McClintic is the Monticello mayor, and he’s featured in a Pharos-Tribune photo essay. Among the P-T carriers there are Alex Martin, Robert Mull, Jim Lowe and Tom Van Thomas.

The Beauty Mark has opened at Eastgate Plaza.

Marion has defeated Rochester 65-49.

Mary Zanger, 77, Fulton, has died.

Logansport High School reserves defeated Star City 22-0 in a football game played at Spencer Park.

All school classes will be out for two days this week in observance of Thanksgiving.

Elizabeth Miller and William Heffley have been married.

Michael Kennedy, 58, a Lafayette businessman, has died.

William Clancy and Mary Gibbs have been married.

Mrs. M.D. Brown of Bluffton died of a stroke after learning of her son’s death.

Jesse Stilwell of Portland, Ore., will marry Maud Milburn of this city.

Christina Schoot, 2028 George St., a pioneer Logansport resident, has died, as has Lillian Ball, a 32-year-old Clay Township resident.
