In Winamac, Paul Neely’s contract as Pulaski Memorial Hospital administrator has been terminated by the board.

Hakeem Olajuwon has been taken first in the NBA draft. He’ll stay in Houston and play alongside Ralph Sampson for the Houston Rockets. The Portland Trailblazers picked second, choosing Kentucky’s Sam Bowie. The No. 3 pick was North Carolina’s Michael Jordan. He was chosen by the Chicago Bulls, who decided to pick him when they were unable to swing a deal for a legitimate starting center.

Betty Rendel of Miami County is telling Indiana Republicans they have to guard against complacency.

Florence Earp, the Union Township trustee in Fulton County, has been fined $1,000 by Marshall Superior Court Judge R. Alexis Clarke because she failed to provide Winamac attorney Daniel Murphy with a copy of a study on the Kewanna school. She also will pay Murphy’s fees.

St. Louis Cardinals Manager Whitey Herzog is shaking his head after Chicago Cub second baseman Ryne Sandberg slugged two home runs in a 12-11 win on national television. “He’s the best I’ve ever seen and that’s it,” Herzog said. Sandberg homered off former Cub Bruce Sutter in the ninth inning to tie the game and tied it a second time in the 11th before the Cubs pushed across the winning run. Sandberg had five hits on the day.

Bill Pfister, 36, a Huntington native who has been the principal at Lawrenceburg High School, is the new Logansport High School principal.

Logansport residents have petitioned the Logansport Board of Public Works and Safety to help preserve properties at 800 and 813 North St.

Cass County schools will receive more than $1 million more this year than last.

A new Logansport Community School Corporation will be created effective Aug. 1, and that move reflects the consolidation of Logansport with Eel and Clay Township schools. Students from both townships have been attending Logansport schools for some time on a transfer basis.

Tony Taylor, the lead-off man for the Chicago Cubs and the team’s only .300 hitter, was unconscious after he was hit by a pitch.

Pipe Creek Falls is open for the summer. The hours for picnic tables and the snack bar are from 2 to 9 p.m. every day except Wednesday and Saturday when the hours will be noon to 9.

Walter Williams, 116, the last living American Civil War veteran, is improving after being diagnosed with pneumonia.

St. Peter’s Parish in Winamac is celebrating its 100th anniversary.

Carroll County Home Demonstration members are promoting polio shots.

George Naftzger is among local college students working at Logansport State Hospital this summer.

Ethel Barrymore, 79, the first lady of the American theater, has died. The Philadelphia native was born into a stage production company. Her father, John Drew, was an actor.

Logansport’s Jim David is on a ship boun for Finland.

Logansport teachers Elizabeth Blizzard, Maude Schilling and Mary Groninger are on their way to Puerto Rico. Blizzard will go on to Venezuela where she will teach this year.

Dodger pitcher Sandy Koufax struck out 16 Phillies to set a Major League night game record. His feat was one shy of the all-time mark set by Dizzy Dean.

Major League Baseball Commissioner Ford Frick says a third league may be in the offing that will require another 200 baseball players. A growing American economy will support more teams, he says.

At the Logan, Susan Hayward is starring in “Woman Obsessed.”.

The American Farm Bureau is opposing Canadian pork imports because the Canadian government is supporting the pork industry.

Robert Downey and T.H. Jackson have been appointed to the Monticello School Board.

Two new Logansport parking lots will accommodate nearly 100 cars. The lots will be located at Fifth and North and Fifth and Market.

The Elks Picnic committees have been named and among the chairs are Dallas Williams, Fred Edgerly Jr., Charles Ensfield and Clayton Bunger. Frank Tolbert and Paul Viney also are involved.

A compression regulator on the Vanguard rocket has failed.

Larry Hood has taken a bride named Phyllis. The couple was married at Salem Methodist Church and one of the pastors was Dean Cornelius.

An upcoming election could cement a consolidation of Liberty and Wayne townships in Fulton County with Adams and Bethlehem townships in Cass County.

There are 3,302 rural mailboxes with Logansport addresses.
