PUBLIC FORUM: Let’s return God to schools

With the recent events in Newtown, Conn., my heart is hurting, and my soul is wishing there was another place it could be. As tragic as this situation is, it doesn’t have to be this way. We often wonder why and say that he had a troubled childhood.

There are many people who had less than idyllic childhoods. I’m one of them, having been raised in orphanages and reform schools, Whites Institute and foster homes. Wasn’t fun, but I had a place to stay and was fed.

Anyway, I knew what discipline was and had to go to church every day of the week and twice on Sunday. I didn’t grow up to be especially religious, and I didn’t go to church every Sunday, but when I ran into troubled times in my life, I knew where to go for help, and although I wasn’t sure I would get it, I had faith that God would be there for me. And I wasn’t wrong.

I’m an old man now. But with the recent decision the Supreme Court made ruling that prayer is unconstitutional in school, it’s no wonder the younger generation is having problems. Their moral guidelines were taken away from them, and they have no one to turn to in difficult times. What a shame. Why didn’t anyone challenge the Supreme Court’s decision.

Then we wonder why there are gangs, bullying, rape, dysfunctional families and a multitude of other crimes. It wasn’t like this in the ’50s. Give people the right to express their beliefs whatever religion they belong to. Then maybe things will improve and families will not have to live through the unimaginable pain of losing a child. To the families in Newtown, all I have to offer is my sorrow, my tears and my prayers.

I vividly remember the picket line outside the city building in August 2011, where about 100 people stood against accepting Duke’s proposal to close the Logansport Municipal Utilities plant and stood for keeping local jobs, which prompted the Utility Service Board to keep looking at options.

  • OUR VIEW: Scammers seek profit from tragedy

We’re disgusted we even have to write this editorial.
As residents of Oklahoma City and its suburbs barely start the process of picking themselves up off the ground, we’ve already received warnings from state police about scammers looking to make a quick buck off the misfortune of others.
