Logansport can’t afford scholarship

Am I the only one who remembers what the council said right after the property taxes were lowered?

As I remember it was on the front page. They were thinking of laying off police and firemen. They said the police cars would run out of gas and patrols had to be cut back and the list goes on forever. The park department would have to stop mowing some areas and wanted volunteers to mow. It wasn't a week after this was printed that they found a cache of money and suggested giving the city workers a raise. (I was going to call them and volunteer to mow. Sure glad I didn't.)

But when the fund runs out of money, what then? Just two months ago, it was decided that the trash and recycling was costing too much and the city couldn’t afford to pay any more and that everybody would be billed through LMU for their trash and recycling. Don’t forget the increase in sewer bills for the next 25 years going as high as $50.

In general, people who are retired have taken a 10 percent to 20 percent cut in benefits and an increase of 25 percent in cost of living. Most of us don’t have any more to give unless we can find a job at age 70?

But now they want to spend $100,000 on a scholarship for students!

The reasoning is that our many graduates who are now unemployed and the new graduates will hang around on unemployment until a new factory is built or moves into one of the many empty sites around town. Get real! Those students will move out of Logansport and most likely Indiana to find a good job.

People of Logansport, wake up! This bunch of (can't find words to describe) can’t think past their own self importance, I wonder if they have maps in their pockets showing them how to get home? Maybe they should wear royal purple robes so they can set themselves separate from the ordinary people. Just maybe the council members ought to subscribe to the Pharos-Tribune because what you say always ends up in the paper along with many questioning opinions. If this group of people is so benevolence led, then let them give to those in need out of their own pockets and not mine.
