Hendricks, Jordan win state swim titles

At-risk Cass County students are succeeding academically at the Twin Rivers Academy alternative school.

Austin Croshere has led the Pacers to a 105-85 win.

Drop Everything and Read Day is being planned by Patti Wolf and other Logansport teachers as a demonstration of reading importance community-wide. At an appointed time, many community leaders will stop what they’re doing and read.

Steve Alford has lost his first game as the new Iowa basketball coach.

“Elmo” is playing at the State.

General Motors has dumped Mazda.

Larry Ulrich, executive director of Four County Counseling Center, has made good on a promise to his 225 employees. After they exceeded the center goal for pledges to United Way, Ulrich wore a tutu to a staff meeting.

Traffic-calming solutions are being considered for Logansport.

Logansport Community School Corporation officials are examining what can be done to improve or replace sections of the high school at the El-Tip-Wa Vocational School.

Ryne Sandberg of the Chicago Cubs has been named the National League’s Most Valuable Player.

An historic change has been made in South Africa where Desmond Tutu has been named an archbishop.

“Little Drummer Girl” is playing at the UA.

Logansport’s Heidi Hendricks won two state titles and set state records in both events in her first ever state swimming meet. Jenny Jordan also won a state title at the meet, and swimmers Stacy Iles, Carrie Manning and Krista Iles also represented the Lady Berries.

PSI has abandoned the Marble Hill Nuclear Plant project after failing to find another party to take over the project.

The Logansport Noon Kiwanis Club celebrated its 65th anniversary.

Bernard and Edna Frohreich celebrated their golden wedding anniversary.

Brent Kelley scored 37 for Caston in a 63-62 win over Rochester.

The New England Patriots have defeated the Colts 50-17.

Lillian Neher is celebrating her 90th.

The runway at the White County Airport has been extended to 4,000 feet.

Rebbie Jackson, the oldest of the Jackson siblings, has recorded her first record.

The Twin Lakes School Corporation has sold the Yeoman School building.

An unknown would-be engineer took a Conrail railroad engine for a joyride at the 18th Street crossing, causing $10,000 in damage to railroad cars.

 

50 Years Ago

As expected, Vincennes Democrat Matt Welsh has announced he will run for governor next year.

Logansport has placed eight players on the UPI All-State Football Team. The Berries dropped to No. 4 in the final UPI poll behind South Bend Central, Cathedral and East Chicago Roosevelt.

Pittsburgh has defeated Notre Dame.

Walter Kelsey is a former semi-pro football player who serves as a guide along the Tippecanoe River.

“South Pacific” is playing at the Isis in Winamac.

Mr. and Mrs. Chester Boatman are celebrating their golden wedding anniversary in the parlors at Market Street Methodist.

Metea has defeated Twelve Mile to take possession of the county keg in high school basketball.

The Logansport Berries are preparing for a rugged schedule that includes Mishawaka, Fort Wayne South, South Bend Central, Huntington and the Frankfort Tourney in addition to the usually brutal North Central Conference slate.

Willie McCovey, 21, is the National League Rookie of the Year. He hit .356 and slugged 12 homers.

 

100 Years Ago

The Bishop Bank in Walton has been robbed. Thieves made way with an undetermined amount of cash in a buggy.

The ninth diphtheria death in Cass County has been recorded, and the disease also has forced the postponement of Sunday school classes.

Carl Wright and Earl Groninger of Deer Creek Township have been hired as helpers at the Panhandle Shops.

A train shipment of navel oranges from California has arrived at Caruso’s.

C.E. Etnire and Charles Trout have opened a grocery at 228 E. Market St.

Arthur Dock of the Donahue Farm south of the city shucked 1,333 bushels of corn in 11 days and was paid 3 cents a bushel.

Police will punish any boy who hangs on to an automobile.

An Anoka man shucked 50 bushels of corn in three hours which he claims is a record.

Joe Regan of Logansport is headed to Racine, Wisc., where he will compete for an Indianapolis polo team.

Cora Dunn and Henry Bauer are planning a Thanksgiving wedding.

A mild winter is forecast.
