Tonight will be a great night to be in Logansport.
The 12th annual Light Up Logansport Parade will start at 7 p.m. As in the past, the parade starts at Eighth Street and Broadway. The parade will travel four blocks west to Fourth Street, where it will turn south to Market Street and then east to Fifth Street.
This annual event takes a huge amount of work, and some folks have been getting ready for this year’s parade almost since the last one ended. We offer our thanks to the committee members and to the folks who worked so hard to assemble this year’s floats.
These unique masterpieces are sponsored by local businesses and organizations, and many were built with the help of local students. If you want a closer look, many of the floats will be on display through New Year’s Day at Little Turtle Waterway Plaza.
The parade, though, won’t be the only thing happening downtown tonight.
The fun starts at 5:30 p.m. in the parking lot at Security Federal Savings Bank where Santa Claus will be on hand to greet children and pass out candy and other items. Toys for Tots will have a drop box for unwrapped toys. The first 500 people will have a chance to partake in hot dogs, chips and hot chocolate provided by Security Federal and handed out by the Salvation Army. Bank representatives will be passing out popcorn, and Woodbridge will be providing hot chocolate.
The Logansport Children’s Choir will perform starting at 6 p.m., and Reading Railroad will be on hand to give away children’s books.
Don’t forget to bundle up. Tonight’s forecast calls for no rain or snow, but temperatures are likely to be in the low 30s by the time the parade begins.
This annual parade has grown into a wonderful holiday tradition. Organizers are expecting thousands of people to line up along the parade route through downtown Logansport. A marketing survey in 2003 found visitors coming from Michigan, Illinois and Ohio.
It promises to be a fun evening for the whole family. Don’t miss it.
