PUBLIC FORUM: City not spending on fancy gym

— My letter is in response to one that was printed in your paper on Sunday, Feb. 17, 2013, and written by Becky Hanawalt of Logansport. The forum was titled “A gym going in at City Hall?”

Mrs. Hanawalt is correct that on Feb.  1, 2013, she did see a truck and trailer with  “very nice looking” exercise equipment on it. What Mrs. Hanawalt did not understand was that it was being taken from the City Building to the Logansport Annex Building (former Salvation Army). The workout area is being moved from the basement of the City Building because it was located beneath the Logansport Municipal Utilities Superintendent’s Office, and when the workout area was used during normal business hours it caused a disruption for the superintendent. I spoke with Mayor Franklin about the disruption and he agreed to allow the Logansport Police Department to utilize the Logansport Annex Building.

I have been a Logansport police officer since 1989 and there has always been a workout area for police officers located in the basement of the City Building. Also, over half of the equipment that is in that workout area has been purchased by officers and brought in for everyone to utilize.

I do not understand the purpose of the forum by Mrs. Hanawalt, but there is no new gym at the City Building! The “very nice looking exercise equipment” comment must have been directed at the cost for taxpayers. The Logansport Police Department is budgeted $500.00 annually for weight room equipment, which doesn’t get you far. This is why officers make purchases themselves for the workout area.

I would have spoken to Mrs. Hanawalt and answered her questions in regards to this if she would have called, but instead she thought it necessary to write a Public Forum.

I am available at the Logansport Police Department to speak with any citizen about the Department at 574-753-4101.

Michael L. Clark, Logansport Police Department chief
