Logansport senior Jayson Higgins had a good look from the 3-point line at the end of regulation that could have ended it.
When he got the same look in overtime, it splashed through for what was perhaps the biggest shot of the game.
The Berries were able to pull out a 55-48 win in overtime at Peru on Wednesday night in a season-opening game. It was the Berries’ first win over their old rival in three years.
Antonio Penny scored 28 points, 23 in the second half, to lead Logan to the win. Higgins added 18 on six 3-pointers against Peru’s 2-3 zone.
“This is always a tough place to play, first night. You’re really not sure what to expect,” Logan coach Mark Victor said. “I think our kids have been through it a lot with the six seniors. They know how to win, so that was good to see.
“I thought it was a great team win for us.”
The Berries led most of the way including by 11 at two different points late in the third quarter. But the Tigers kept clawing away, and they went on a 9-0 run in the fourth quarter and took a 42-38 lead on two Eddie Childers free throws with 2:19 to go.
The Berries fought back. Bo Bullard scored on a putback and Nate Bullard hit two free throws with 1:34 to go to tie the game. The Berries also forced three turnovers in a row with fullcourt pressure.
Penny then gave them a 44-42 lead on an assist by Bo Bullard with 1:10 left.
Peru’s Seth Adelsperger, a 6-foot-10 sophomore, tied the game at 44-all on a tip-in with :13 remaining. Higgins got a good look in the right corner that could have won it, which he later amended.
Higgins’ 3-pointer with 1:40 left in OT gave Logan a 51-46 lead. Penny opened the overtime with two free throws and a basket on an assist by Bo Bullard. The duo hit 4 of 6 free throws in the closing minute to put the win on ice.
The Berries hit 13 of 16 free throws in the fourth quarter and overtime.
Peru sophomore Logan Primerano, who hit the game-winning free throw in the Berry Bowl last season, led the Tigers with 16 points. Joe Comerford scored 10, and Childers added nine.
Adelsperger scored just four points, but he was a force in the paint on the defensive end blocking and altering shots.
“He’s going to be a nice player, he really is. They’re a pretty young team overall,” Victor said.
First-year Peru coach Jim Metcalfe thought his team wasn’t ready to contend just yet in the Mid-Indiana Conference, but he might have to reconsider following a solid showing against a veteran Logansport team.
“We have a lot to be encouraged about,” he said. “We did some positive things, and things we can obviously do better. When you have three sophomores on the floor, you’re going to have inexperience and you’re only going to get better. It’s disappointing, but not devastating. I’ve seen a lot of good teams lose the first one and still have a good season.”
The Tigers certainly have good size with a starting lineup that includes 6-10, 6-6, 6-4 and 6-4.
Metcalfe talked about Adelsperger.
“There’s a lot to be excited about. He played an effective game on defense. He has to get stronger and more physical. He has to keep working,” he said.
Logan won the turnover battle 23-9.
“When gave them 14 more possession. Any time the ball is in Penny’s hands, good things can happen,” Metcalfe said.
“That senior leadership showed.”
