Logan gymnastics team opens with easy win

Platt, Pomasl battle through injuries, excel in first varsity event.

There were mixed emotions entering the Logansport gymnastic team’s first dual meet of the season on Thursday.

On one hand, there was excitement with two freshmen Level 9 gymnasts competing in front of the home crowd for the first time in Kelley Platt and Emily Pomasl. But on the other hand there was sadness in that another Level 9 gymnast, senior Morgan Kline, could not compete due to a torn ACL injury.

The Berries were able to easily defeat Northwestern 100.45-87.15 at the LHS auxiliary gym.

Pomasl and Platt were battling injuries of their own.

Pomasl was able to win the all-around with a 34.35 despite battling back and hip injuries. She was tops on floor (9.05), second on bars and third on beam and vault.

Platt was limited to just two events because of an ankle injury. She won both events, winning on bars with a 9.4 and on beam with a 9.25.

Hannah Brandt placed third in the all-around and floor and was fifth on vault. Maddy Rosenberger was second on beam and third on bars. Ashlyn Brown was fourth on beam. Kaleigh Wilkinson was fourth on floor, Jess Brazzle was fifth and Liz Nies was sixth. Nies was also sixth on bars and vault.

“It was a good first meet. I think we came out strong,” Logan coach Dannan Mordenti said. “I think we had a couple wobbles and things, but that just comes with the beginning of the season and we’ll work hard to get those little bobbles away and really focus on hitting those routines.”

Kline was in good spirits and was walking around the gym well on her recently surgically-repaired knee. She hopes to return by the end of the season on bars, where she can still help out a team with state finals aspirations.

“It breaks my heart,” Mordenti said of Kline having to miss the start of the season and being limited if she can come back.

As for getting a boost with two more Level 9 gymnasts joining the program, Mordenti said, “For all my girls I hold them to a high level. Level 9, they have some really hard skills, and they are perfecting them every day just like any other skill.”

The Berries are hoping to get Platt and Pomasl fully healed up and Kline back on bars before the upcoming tournament season. The North Central Conference meet is on Feb. 16 at New Castle, and the sectional is on March 1 at Lafayette Jeff.

The Berries next compete at the Northwestern Invite on Jan. 19.
