GIRLS BASKETBALL: Logan wallops Winamac on senior night, moves to 21-1

If Thursday’s game against Winamac is any indication, Logansport’s girls basketball team is primed for what could be an exciting tournament run.

The Berries celebrated senior night with a 67-26 drubbing of Winamac at the Berry Bowl.

The Berries improved to 21-1 on the season and set a school record for wins in a regular season. They got an assist by playing in the Hall of Fame Classic, which added two games to the schedule.

Logan’s Jennings sisters put on quite a show on Thursday. Rachel Jennings returned from an illness that slowed her last week and scored a game-high 22 points on 7-of-10 shooting. She was 4 of 7 from 3-point range.

“I definitely have my energy back and I definitely feel a lot better than I did Friday night [at New Castle],” Jennings said.

Whitney Jennings had 21 points, nine assists and eight steals. The junior enters next week’s sectional just 10 points shy of 1,700 for her career.

It was an emotional night for the Berries, and the Jennings sisters talked about it afterwards.

“It’s bittersweet. It’s one of my last games with Whitney, so that’s really the hardest thing,” Rachel said.

The Berries are hoping to win three more games in the Berry Bowl, as they’re hosting a Class 4A sectional next week.

“Let’s hope we win sectionals, but it’s going to be tough because every team is going to give us a good game so we really have to come out and play,” Rachel said.

Said Whitney: “It’s tough since Rachel’s a senior along with Kiley [Victor], Maddy [Price] and Seanna [Redman], because we’ve all been playing together since we were really little. It’s definitely weird that they’re not going to be out there with me next year, but we’re going to enjoy this year and see how far we can make it.”

Nakeya Penny scored seven points for the Berries. Victor posted five points and a game-high 12 rebounds. Price had two points and five boards, and Syd Bullard added four points and eight boards.

Redman got the start in her first action less than seven weeks removed from tearing her ACL in a game on Dec. 15 at Anderson. She played the first three minutes of the game, then returned in the fourth quarter and hit her first shot, a 3-pointer, with 4:30 left in the contest. She played a total of six minutes.

“I couldn’t stop smiling. I was really excited,” Redman said. “I’ve been working really hard to get back out there. My knee gave out a couple days ago, so I didn’t know if I was going to be able to do it. I’m really proud of myself for sticking through.”

Redman hopes to be able to contribute in the tournament for a team she thinks can make a big run.

“I’m so proud of them. I can’t express that enough. They really make me happy,” she said.

Bethany Brogdon led the Warriors (15-5) with nine points. Jessica Schramm had six. Freshman Ali Larkin added five points and nine boards.

The Warriors again played without standout post player Stephanie Shorter, who was out with a broken hand. Winamac coach Jeff Wagner said he thinks Shorter will ready to go for the Warriors’ Class 2A sectional game against host Hebron on Tuesday.

As for playing a team the caliber of Logansport right before the sectional, Wagner said, “You can look at it in two ways. You can go into your next game and go, wow, this a lot easier. Hopefully that’s what we’re looking at.”

As for facing Whitney Jennings and the Berries, Wagner said, “It’s just hard to stay with her because you have to worry about so many other places where she can kick the ball.”

The Berries face sectional nemesis McCutcheon at 6 p.m. Tuesday to open sectional play. The Mavericks have knocked off the Berries in three straight sectional finals, but Logan had a 79-35 win at McCutcheon back on Nov. 9.
